In The Rock and the River, by Kekla Magoon, “all it takes for evil to exist is for good people to do nothing” is a prominent theme. An example of this is when Bucky had just been brutally beat and arrested by the police. The police did this in broad daylight in front of everyone including Maxie and Sam. “People on the street began going about their business again. The radio blasted, covering the silence of disbelief, of resignation.” (pg. 68). This quote demonstrates the theme because it shows that if the people watching the violence happen (aka the “good people”) do nothing, then the cop’s racism (aka the evil) would continue existing.…

Beer might have/had influenced the transition from hunting and gathering to agricultural-based societies. One way beer could have done this was that after the discovery of beer, the demand for beer began to increase. With increase demand for beer, farming would increase taking away time to hunt and gather for food. With less hunting and gathering, farmers eventually settled down in small areas around the Fertile Crescent to create beer.…

What are you doing to help our environment? Are you recycling because it positively impacts the environment, or are you recycling because it is trendy? According to Alex Williams essay, “Buying into the Green Movement,” companies are turning an environmental movement into a fashion statement. Many people are only buying eco-friendly products because television and magazines advertise the movement as a new trend. The eco-friendly fashion statement is actually making consumers buy more, which defeats the purpose of conserving our planet. Although it is important to buy and pay attention to economically efficient products, sometimes less is actually more. The essay argues that many people are not cutting back on their usage of day-to-day items. William’s essay strongly shows his passion about the subject. Williams is able to persuade his audience to consume less through his use of logos by stating facts, using ethos to…

Americans are very aware of the importance of “going green” as it reduces pollution and protects the earth from global warming. Going green generally includes recycling, buying environmentally-friendly products, energy efficient electronics, and living off the land. However, the reality is there are many obstacles to going green; the primary of which is cost effectiveness (Outka, 2012). The United States is currently in an economic crisis, and most Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to pay their bills. Therefore, when faced with having to purchase an expensive item such as an appliance or automobile it is difficult to look beyond the price tag at the going green investment. While most citizens believe they are making a difference by recycling, the truth is a large percentage of our curbside recycling is either burned or sent to landfills because it has been contaminated due to ineffective recycling procedures, or it ends up traveling long distances, which increases the cost and air pollution (Kaiser, 2010). All of these facts prove that going green is not cost effective because the products are expensive and it take time (sometimes years) to see a savings or value, curb side recycling is wasteful, and recycling cost a substantial amount more than trash disposal.…

Recycling is one of the key issues that are presented as one of the tools of environment saving. Recycling is an attitude that every person can follow in order to be a part of the earth saving process. “Helping to reduce the problems that are affecting our environment is something we all want to do, but it can be often difficult to know where to start. Collecting materials like glass, cans , paper, clothes and plastics is something we all can do, everyday, in our homes”[1].However recycling is a cycle that does not work unless each of the private and public sectors plays his role and corporate with the other. The argument of this paper is to analyze the role of private institutions in the recycling process. The AUB recycling project is the case study chosen for this issue.…

Consumers also know that usefulness can fade, and the pleasure that came from new purchases can be fleeting. Apart from the usual solution to this problem, which is to buy more new items, it’s worth thinking that getting rid of items that are no longer needed or wanted can feel as good as getting it. Freecycle.org has made a name for themselves by doing just that. The concept has worked so well and because of word of mouth, many people want to become more “eco-friendly”, everyone cares about the environment and they want to do their part. One of the reasons they’ve been so successful, is because everybody wants to do their part to help the environment.…

Everyday citizens of Plano, Texas are faced with the decision of whether or not to recycle. Without an adequate recycling system in the city, our immediate environment could face serious consequences. Recycling should come naturally to every citizen in Plano, Texas if they have proper resources to dispose of recycled materials in order to preserve our environment and to “keep Plano beautiful”.…

Gerbner’s cultivation theory states that television has become the main source of storytelling in today's society. It is the study of long term effects of television to society. This conduct of research is mainly carried out in America to analyze the audience there who are mainly categorized as couch potatoes. Cultivation theory also shows how people react after watching a particular program/movie on the television because cultivation theory is mainly based on how the television cultivates or moulds the mindset of society. It is also said that those who watch four or more hours a day are labeled heavy television viewers and those who view less than four hours per day are light viewers based on Gerbner’s research. Heavy viewers are exposed to more violence and therefore are affected by the Mean World Syndrome, it is an idea that the world is worse than it actually is and people tend to be more afraid of living their life’s peacefully. I carried out my survey from Tuesday 1st November 2011 to Monday 14th November 2011 and in this time I monitored my own use of Media output. All data was gathered by means of a Diary application on my phone. I spent an average of nine hours per day exposed to the media. My average day begins with a radio alarm clock playing ‘Spin FM’ and I also carry an iPod with some of my favourite tracks. I spend most of my weekday at college where there is little media exposure with the exception of the computer lab where I usually spend about an hour a day. I return home most evenings and watch TV as I study and read and I also browse the internet at night.…
