Course Objective:
Our objective will be to understand money and the financial system and its integral role in the economy. We will explore:
• How financial markets determine interest rates and why different assets earn different rates of returns • The economic functions of financial services firms • The risk management practices of financial services firms • The role of regulation in controlling the behavior of financial services firms • How the central bank and financial services firms interact to create liquidity in the financial system and markets • The role of the central bank in the economy and the conduct of monetary policy • How monetary policy activities influence the pricing of assets and the economy • Elements of financial systems and how financial markets and institutions function in the global financial system.
We will also examine current events and trends in these areas as well as in the regulatory environment, international financial systems, and financial industry consolidation.

Teaching Approach:
The method of instruction will be lecture, group discussion and written analysis of relevant topics. It is essential that you complete the assigned readings by the scheduled dates and that you be
