The economy of the United States expanded greatly through the 1920's reaching its climax in August 1929. By this point, production had already declined and unemployment was at an all-time high, leaving stocks to imitate their real value. During the stock market crash of 1929, better known as Black Tuesday, investors traded vast numbers of shares in a single day, causing billions of dollars to be lost and millions of investors to be eliminated. This "crash" signaled the beginning of a decade long Great Depression that would affect all Western industrialized nations; a crash that would later become known as one of the darkest, longest lasting, economic downturns in American history. People all around the world suffered greatly as personal income,…

The depression had given rise to the worst crisis at the time in banking where almost 9,000 banks were shut down in a four year period. Ninety percent of small community banks failed because customers withdrew all the money from their accounts, resulting in massive decreases of the bank’s capital. With only ten percent of small community banks still in business it could be safely said that the banking industry had sunk almost as low as it could get. Clearly the banks were going to be blamed for the economic problems. Congressional hearings in early 1933 revealed huge irresponsibility on the part of these banks, which had used billions of dollars of depositors' funds to acquire stocks and bonds, and had made risky loans to inflate the prices…

The Stock Market Crash, also know as Black Tuesday, was the most important factor that led to the Great Depression. In the late 1920s the stock prices had gains of 25 percent, 38 percent in 1938, and 30 percent until late 1929. Followed by these gains was the crash in October of 1929 when the stock price declined immensely before bottoming out in 1929. Overall the total deficit during the four year period from 1929 to 1932 was 82 percent. The stock market crash caused an accelerated decline in the economic output in the United States for a few reasons. First, with the decline in stock prices close to $20 billion, household wealth was reduced per person. Second, the stock prices reduced the market value for new capital goods, meaning a reduction…

History.com recounts that in one year 4 million people were unemployed and by the next year another 2 million were added to that leaving 6 million Americans without jobs by 1931 (The Great Depression). On October 29, 1929, also known as “Black Tuesday”, the stock market crashed. This was caused by the trade of millions of stocks in one single day, sending Wall Street into a panic and naming the start of ten year economic depression. Following the crash, many American people rushed to the banks to retrieve their money and savings but at this time the banks did not have enough actual cash to give each person their invested amount in full starting the historical event known as the Bank Run. At this time, Herbert Hoover was in the Presidential Office and many of the American citizens blamed the economy’s downfall on him, even naming their shantytowns “Hoovervilles” to insult him and his failed recognition of the severity of the Great Depression. Four years into the depression the people elected a new President, a man by the name of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, he was Inaugurated on March 4, 1933, and from that day forward change was implemented.…

As the American economy is presently dealing with a heavy recession, I deemed it appropriate to choose the Great Depression and the Stock Market Crash of 1929 as the topic for my research paper. The Great Depression was a 10 year period of suffering in the United States from 1929 to 1939, also majorly affecting the rest of North America, Europe and other industrialized areas across the globe, caused by many different events and choices. In early 1929, as the New Era neared its calamitous end, America was the richest nation in the world; the richest in all history. America’s 122 million people had more real wealth and real income, both per person and in total, than the people of any other country (Chandler, 1970). General observations of the stock market frequently discussed were of the high stock prices, and speculations were made about what would happen in the late 1920s. Were the stocks generally too high? Or was this a new level for the stock market? October 29, 1929, otherwise known as Black Tuesday, gave a precise answer to these questions with the crash of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the start of the Great Depression in America, quickly to spread across the globe.…

The true story behind Black Friday, however, is not as sunny as retailers might have you believe. Back in the 1950s, police in the city of Philadelphia used the term to describe the chaos that ensued on the day after Thanksgiving, when hordes of suburban shoppers and tourists flooded into the city in advance of the big Army-Navy football game held on that Saturday every year. Not only would Philly cops not be able to take the day off, but they would have to work extra-long shifts dealing with the additional crowds and traffic. Shoplifters would also take advantage of the bedlam in stores to make off with merchandise, adding to the law enforcement headache.…

In October, people begin to plan their Halloween costumes; We buy fabric from China, glitter from India, makeup from Thailand and dye from Indonesia. In November, we make turkey cutouts from construction paper and paper plates. We consume mass amounts of food as Americans and then we go shopping for Black Friday. We get a few plastic bags from every store we visit and end up with dozens. Have you ever compared the behaviors of wild animals with that of Black Friday Shoppers? They are very similar. Black Friday should be banned because it can be very dangerous. It also encourages overspending with buying too much. Retail workers lose their thanksgiving (and have to deal with an overwhelming amount of customers. I understand that it’s a great way to save money on Christmas gifts, however there is still Cyber Monday to get great prices online without waiting in line for hours and acting like animals to get low prices. In conclusion, Black Friday should not be an American tradition.…
