Financial Planners are facing ethical challenges
Maintaining the abilities and knowledge necessary to provide a professional service has been voted as the greatest ethical challenge for Financial Planners.

The results come from the latest monthly survey conducted by Financial Planet, a site developed by the Financial Planning Standards Board to bring together Financial Planners around the world.

Second place was placing the client’s interest first and third was disclosing and managing conflicts of interest.

Other ethical challenges included providing a service with integrity and providing an objective service.

Ethics are a key issue within the Financial Planning community and the Financial Services Authority expects that firms are able to demonstrate strong ethical behaviour as a core part of their overall competence and professionalism.

The Institute of Financial Planning has been working with its members to improve ethics in the industry and has its own code of ethics and professional standards.

Adhering to this code is one of the requirements if firms want to be recognised as an Accredited Financial Planning Firm.

An ethics and practice standards day will be held on 26 April in the Midlands to cover this area in greater depth.

The session, titled ‘The Only Way is Ethics’, is the second event of this kind the IFP has run, last year’s event was rated as 8/10 by 74 per cent of delegates.

Ethical topics within CPD include ethical theory, ethical practices such as ethical dilemmas, treating customers fairly and theoretical knowledge of ethical frameworks.

Visit www.financialplanning.org.uk/ethics-practice-standards-day for more information on the ethics and practice standards day.

When one takes an ethics course, several thoughts may come to mind. Some examples of these thoughts include, “This class is useless. How will it help me in my career? Why is this class even required?” However, I believe ethics is a very important topic, especially to myself because in less than two years, I will enter the business world as a professional accountant. As an accountant, we are responsible to report the financials of a company. Investors depend on these financials to decide which company or companies they will invest their hard earned money. If these financials were skewed by the accountants or upper management for merely personal benefit, an investor could be fooled into investing into a company who is about to declare bankruptcy or in serious financial trouble. The investor could then lose their hard earned money due to lack of ethics from the accounting department. This is why ethics means to me to always be honest and do the right thing even if it causes harm to yourself.…

While it would be nice to think that it is easy to make decisions and all come to the same conclusion, this is not always the case. Unfortunately, even regarding ethical decisions where you may think a right and wrong way exist may not be easy to determine. Since everyone has different backgrounds and therefore, different perspectives, we may not agree on what the best course of action is to take in a difficult decision. While I believe that character is the most important, someone else may think that as long as the majority is satisfied that their decision is best. An exercise created by the Williams Institute for Ethics and Management looks at four different perspectives which are referred to using the acronym CORE (2006). This stands for Character, Obligation, Results, and Equity. While one of these is not necessarily better than another, a person from one perspective may reach a different conclusion than someone else. This paper analyzes my perspective as well as compares it to some of the features of the other perspectives. Additionally I will look at several examples of ethical decisions and the conclusion that I come to in each scenario.…
