Scientific Explanation of Finch Mystery
What will we do?
We will construct final explanations to answer the two questions about the finch mystery.
Claim - Evidence - Reasoning
Why did the finches die?
Why were some finches able to survive?
The Galapagos Finches live on the small island deserted island of Daphne Major. Daphne Major is a island in the Galapagos islands. The island is very small and doesn't even have any trees on it. The island is home to owls, hawks and the Galapagos Finches. Around 1977 all the finches started to disappear. A drought started so then it didn’t rain then so the seeds didn’t grow. It only rained 25 centimeter when it usually around 150 centimeters rains, it shows this in the rainfall graph.
Then when the seeds didn’t grow there were not many seeds. The only seeds there were were much harder to get into.
The drought caused much less seeds to grow so the finches didn’t have much food. You can see that they didn’t have much seeds on all plants but in particular the prickly pear cactus which usually has over 500 seeds but in 1977 they had only around 100 seeds. Since there were only around 100 seeds, Its shows this on the Prickly Pear cactus seeds graph it was every bird for itself.
Since there was lack of food there was a steep decline in the weight in the birds. The most of the birds died from lack of food. In 1977 there were only around 15 birds on the island most weighing 14 grams where in years prior the birds weight anywhere from 6.9 grams to 19.9 grams. The weight of the birds were found on the weight of the birds graph. It makes sense since there were not many seeds on the island for all the birds that lots would die from lack of food.
The population reduction of the Galapagos Finches was caused from lack of rain. Lack of rain then turned into the birds having no seeds to eat that lead the them dying from starvation. Luckily some of the birds found ways to survive.
