Finding Myself
Finding Myself Do you ever feel like someone is making you someone you aren’t? The people that you hang out with influence who you are as a person. Unfortunately, I was someone who started to change the way I was because people wanted me too. I found myself forgetting about God, my family, sports, and my grades. Something like this took a very personal turn on how I viewed life and people in general. It was in the summer that I realized how much being “cool” meant to somebody. One day, my friend named Jessica and I were being ignored by the rest of our group of friends. We didn’t seem to mind it as much in the beginning, until it happened again. We started to wonder why they didn’t like us anymore. Amba, the oldest one in the group explained to us that we weren’t “cool enough” to be with them anymore. She was implying that we didn’t get into bad things with them and go to parties with all of these boys. When I heard her telling me this, my heart broke into pieces. It was sad to say that I changed the way I was for who they wanted me to be. Since I was so upset, I didn’t talk to her for a couple of days. I really thought about what I should do. I was too young to realize that a friendship with someone wasn’t worth changing who I was. When I started talking to her, she agreed to let me back into the group if I did some of the things that were “cool”. I went to a couple of parties that had people acting very immature. Although I didn’t do any of these things they were doing, I still pretended like I was and acted as if I were enjoying it. I started to have a lot of boyfriend’s that would keep my mind away from my school work and my family. My boyfriends would even keep me away from doing the things I love including sports. Everything was happening so fast, and even my “friends” couldn’t recognize me. On a warm summer night, Jessica came up to me. “How have you been Alex? I haven’t talked to you in so long. Church and swimming aren’t the same without

For about as long as I could remember, my wish has always been to fit in, and be well-liked by everyone. I began acting a certain way that wasn’t me, and even began to lose my identity. I followed all trends and began to lose more and more of my identity as time chipped away. This all stopped as soon as high school began. High school was such a disquieting transition along with all of the new changes I’d be facing. New classmates, teachers, subjects, and responsibilities. I was now required to think twice before every move and concentrate on everything more adequately. All these changes made me begin to realize that I should learn more about my identity and do what makes me tranquil and content as a person.…

She takes every opportunity to fit in, but other people’s judgment on her makes it hard for her to except who she is as a person. “The salesgirl turns and walks out. Just like all the other girls in her school. “It is freshman year all over again. Only this time Jennifer wouldn’t be blindsided. This time, she knows she’s the ugliest girl in the room” (330). Over the years that I’ve been at Burdick, I’ve gained many great friends, but I also lost a few. Only a few selective of them, I tell my secrets to. For example, Kaiden, Coreena, Dakota, Elysium, Joelle, Jose, and Isaiah. They’re the greatest friends anyone could ask for and have. They’re loyal, truthful, understanding, funny, witty, sarcastic, and just plain awesome. I have them to thank for making ordinary moments, extraordinary. They’re always there when I want to hang out or vent out my feelings. They put in that extra effort to understand me for who I am, not caring the slightest bit about my flaws and imperfections. And if I ever need to shed some tears, I know that at least one of them will be there to comfort me. There are times where…

The profile we were given about Sarah did not specify the type of friends that she had previously, which could be speculated that she did not have very many friends. Meeting these new girls, who showed interest in gaining a friendship with Sarah caused her to question her good judgment when it came to obeying the rules set forth by her parents, which she followed in the past. She has never missed her curfew in the past.…

I had not seen my friends since the last school year, but none of my so called “friends” would even acknowledge me. Here I was again, scared out of my wits, at a new school, and looking for friends. I met new people and they took me in like a lost puppy looking for a home, one of them ended up living very near to me. Her name was Simi, she was very nice to me; I thought that Simi would actually be the friend for me. It turns out, I was wrong, Simi used me to get what she wanted and I was gullible enough to cave in to her demands. Later on in the year, I finally (after years of searching) found the perfect group of friends. They were amazing and they felt just like my friends back in Ardmore. From that group of friends, I found my best friend Elizabeth Helms, who is still my best friend…

Acquiring my natural optimistic inclination, these words were exhilarating; however, they became the words I soon detested. Lonely, bitter, hateful, and depressed, began to characterize my identity while I endured my transition. Furthermore, my entire life changed from being social, to becoming an outcast to my peers. Interests I used to have, such as reading, running, and philosophy, became absurd and futile. Negativity fueled my drive and motivation appeared nonexistentially throughout the course of my freshman year. Additionally, people from my town did not want to attempt to discern the type of person I was and how my identity became to be. Tammy Sanchez, the worthless “nobody”, became her label. The once buoyant, social, passionate, lady who saw life as her own fairytale, now conceived that life has no blissful ending. Having lost the basis of my being, I would stare into the mirror and constantly fail to recognize the person standing in front of…

Imagine your life back when you were in second grade, and imagine your friends. Studies show that you will remember at least one childhood friend. Maybe from pre-school, or maybe from middle school, but everyone starts with at least one good friend. Now imagine your life with that same person up until now and how much both of you have changed. Most of the time, reasons that people grow apart are due to lack of similarities. Most high schoolers stick next to their “group” or “posse” because they have things in common with each other. Most of the time, you have your drama lovers, art experts, jocks, nerds,…

My first day on the bus, I met a very important person to me. She would soon become the closest friend I would ever have. We shared a name, the interest in video games, and the hobby of drawing. But, other than that, we were very different. She liked white milk and hated chocolate (a.k.a “tainted milk”). I was the opposite. I enjoyed the company of dogs, she was obsessed with cats. But, differences aside, we enjoyed sitting together during lunch and just doodling all over each other's agendas and notebooks. We never really had any classes together, aside from homeroom together.…

“Juana are you almost ready” I heard my mom call from outside the bathroom door. I fell asleep in the shower again. I only had 35 minutes to get ready for my recital. To make things worse I had just got moved up to a more experienced class with 2 people instead of 5. Over the last year me and those girls had become really close even though I only saw them 3 times a week sometimes 2 but in that short time period we learned to trust each other and were happy for others success. In my new class there were 2 girls who had felt that same feeling for 5 years so they were actually best friends. They weren’t very happy with me joining in so they were really mean to me so I didn’t want to be there as much as I did before. I got ready…

While I was waiting, I looked around, and from the window, the sky became darker and darker as the cloud covered the last sunlight. I couldn’t breathe. In about twenty minutes, most parents were there. Then the head teacher started to talk about how seriously we did. She told in front of all these people: “she was the one who cheated teachers and brought her friends out of school. We teachers are responsible for your children’s safety in the school. But who is responsible for that once they are out? Jasmine, can you?” I was shocked. I did not think about that the teacher would blame me for all of this. Everyone in the office was staring at me, and my parents as well. I was ashamed, so ashamed that I wanted to hide, and I can’t stop my tears out. The teacher continued and talked to all of students: “I believed you because you are fifth grade. I thought you are old enough to distinguish right or wrong. But now, I am really disappointed at you guys.” We were still in elementary school, and we were so young to comfort ourselves in this situation. Most of the girls in our group began to sob like me.…

During our adolescent stage, many of us struggle to adhere to our parent rules and regulations, especially when it pertains to selecting friends who will have our best interest at heart. At least for me, during my teenage period, I thought if another teenage was kind to me, then she was automatically my friend. Failing to listen my parents assessment of some of those females, caused me to suffer unnecessary heartaches and embarrassments. Because I had trouble listening, as well as refusing to listen to suggestions and/or demands made by my parents to dissolve certain friendships, only created uncomfortable and hostile environments between schoolmates who I thought were my friends, but who my parents warns me against. I believe it is fair to say that if I had followed the advice given to me by my parents, I would have had a happier junior high friend relationship experience.…

All my friends had gone crazy for the other gender and I had stayed calm and collected instead of a chicken with my head cut off. Staying level headed was never my job, I was always the loud and annoying one that everyone had a love hate relationship with. It was in the middle of PE when I realized I was not on the path I wanted to be on. It actually happened as a guy hit me in the head with a basketball and I saw my best friend, at the time, wasting her time on her phone while I was practicing three pointers. In that moment I had never been so sure that I needed change and I needed it then, so I walked right up to the girl who had her nose shoved up her phone and told her that if she didn’t stop controlling who I was friends with and who I couldn’t be friends with then I would have to find friends that understood me. The truth is she was a really great friend, but we didn’t see eye to eye, she never wanted to hangout, and I am a grade A adventurer. She got mad and spread rumors about me, and being the sophisticated and business like ninth grader I was, I told everyone what a good friend she really was when we first started to hangout and that we just had our different ideas of what true friendship is, which was 100% the truth. That girl had this idea that you could only be friends with her and no one else, and I was the complete opposite, I wanted to be friends with everyone. My mom was…

They were more focused to maintain their “popularity status” than school. As I would consider to join the other group of friend I had, they would manipulate my mind that popularity was a key to success at school. And by the time I really wanted to join the other group of friends, the anxiety grew and took over my mind. My anxiety made me stay with my current friends because I was afraid on what they would do to me if I just left them for another group. My anxiety made me become a weak person that doesn’t want new beginnings anymore.…
