Finding Neverland Movie Review
Analysis of Roger Ebert's "Finding Neverland" Film Review

"Finding Neverland" is a recently released motion picture starring acclaimed actors Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, and directed by Marc Forster ("Monsters Ball") Personally, I loved the movie and It was hard to find a critic that gave the movie a negative review, so I stopped trying to find someone to argue with and I came across the king of all critics, Roger Ebert. I usually don't agree with his reviews, so I figured we would clash on this one, but surprisingly we came to agree on many aspects. He makes a point to mention Freddie Highmore and the remarkable job he did playing the angry but sad role of Peter. A very challenging role for a child that even most adult actors couldn't portray. He can make you feel so sad for him although he is acting like a brat most of the time, but he makes you feel the pain he's going through with the tears and sadness always running through his eyes. He also commends Johnny Depp for his "widely differing roles" bringing up characters Depp has played in the past which gives you a glance at how many different roles he has not only played, but was excellent in portraying. It is obvious Ebert was impressed by Depps performance but it seams he is giving the movie credit to Depp and ignoring the director. "For Depp, "Finding Neverland" is the latest in an extraordinary series of performances. After his Oscar nomination for "Pirates of the Caribbean" (2003), here is another role that seems destined for nomination. And then think of his work in "Secret Window" (2004), the Stephen King story about the author caught in a nightmare, and his demented CIA agent in "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" (2003), and wait until you see him in "The Libertine," as the depraved and shameless Earl of Rochester." He also ignores Kate Winslet's performance and the great job she did.
One thing that I noticed he didn't get into very much was the sexual side of the film. I was glimpsing over a

    1. The author shows his appreciation for this film and its director by first stating that as he watched the film he was in a state of astonishment. Almond also goes into detail about scenes and expresses why the particular scene was important and how great it was. Such as the scene with Alan Ruck in the museum as he is staring at the masterpiece. Almond also talks about how important the characters are and how great of roles Hughes had them play. His main argument is that this film is not just a “teen movie” that it goes much deeper than that.…

The most important criteria for judging this film is the great casting. The cast was excellently picked. Actors in a movie must be believable and able to pull their roles off extremely well. Ebert’s thesis is that all movies have a great meaning behind them. Just because a certain movie is extremely hyped and anticipated by the media doesn’t mean it’s any better than a movie that isn’t as widely known. Movies are meant to do something to a person after it is finished, whether or not they are inspired to do something or feel something. Ebert generally believes that these movies should be seen at a young age to spark something in people’s minds because he sees movies as something far more than just entertainment.…

The movie I chose to do my reaction paper on was “No Country for Old Men”. “No Country for Old Men” came out in theaters in November of 2007. The movie is about an older man named Llewelyn Moss who will go hunting on an afternoon and finds this aftermath of a drug deal gone bad. Even after the fact that he knows better about taking something that doesn’t belong to him, he cannot resist the cash that was left behind at the drug deal gone bad. During the process of him taking the money, the hunter became the hunted because when a killer named Chigurh picks up his trail by having a tracker inside of the brief case that was holding the money Llewelyn found. Sheriff Bell is a man who obeys by the law and also looks back on and reflects on how the world is evolving and also on a deep dark secret that he has of his own, as he tries to find and protect Llewelyn himself. While Llewelyn is on the run Sheriff Bell is wanting to track him down before he gets killed himself. In the No Country for Old Men, there are three main characters the characters are Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, Llewellyn Moss and Anton Chigurh all of these characters in the movie have different concepts of what morality and ethics mean for their lives. All three of these characters have a different moral code and their actions work…

One critic found a flaw in the film as “its powers of insight do not match the vividness of its surface record… he has not found the revealing devices that would open the heart of his story without breaking the admirably cool flow of its recording.” This same critic goes on to comment that its success and reception is mostly based on its win at Cannes. (Hatch). The “insight” Hatch refers to is the subjective realism of how the emotional state of the Antoine Doinel character is shown to the audience. Alpert explicitly points out the approach of candid documentary as a hindrance to the overall movie along with its graininess of the film as trying too hard to be dramatically artistic (Alpert). The expressive nature of the objective realism apparently detracted too much from the subjective realism to a point where the overall film is hurt by it according to these critics. Although the film vividly depicts all aspects of his life in the episodic nature of the film, highbrow reviews mention that there is a lack of subjective realism matching up with the level of objective realism to weaken the film. The reviewers ultimately extend their supposition to how the “highbrow” audience may be disappointed with the film for its imbalanced…

Many critics were not pleased with the movie I have slowly learned to appreciate the finer details and unique styles that directors incorporate into their films. In this case, I appreciate the faithfulness that the film possesses and the absolutely brilliant set and costume design done by Luhrmann and his team. Sometimes sacrifices have to be made in order to satisfy the financial needs of a film, and that is completely understandable especially when the movie’s purpose is to profit. While it may not exceed the standards fans are looking for, it was able to do many things correctly which is something that everyone wants. It’s safe to say that Luhrmann’s overall execution of the film was valid and…

In Robin Wood’s essay: Ideology, Genre, Auteur, Wood revisits Hitchcock’s films and analyses the different characteristics in the films. Wood focuses mostly on Shadow of a Doubt and It’s a Wonderful Life in which he compares and describes the different values of Hollywood cinema. One of Wood’s major points to hear two opposing views. Wood stresses that a critics job should be to look at a piece as a whole rather than at the particular aspects of one of the theories or too superficially, like a genre. Wood, however, then demonstrates what a proper critic should be like, by analyzing and comparing every single aspect, characteristic, and plot details in Shadow of a Doubt and It’s a Wonderful Life.…

This film review will be based on the movie Casablanca. Starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid. Considering the movie is from 1942 i think its astounding. Casablanca is very fast paced and has lots of bold turning points and emotion tyed up inside. I personally find alot of movies trying to copy the sort of theme this movie delivers. The kind of rugged compassionate hypocritical films. I feel Casablanca is very much a classic film that's storyline can almost keep up to some of todays.…
