Mounds of fire ants can be found floating around waters in South Carolina. It is part of the tiny insect’s way of surviving the floods that have affected the state.
In a video captured by WSAV 3 photojournalist Chris Murray, the ants are shown in a mound floating on top of flood waters near Charleston. WSAV 3’s reports that the ants use their claws, jaws and sticky pads on their legs to stick together. There is an oily fluid that keeps them on a smooth surface – such as the top of the water – and the ant’s hard covering is water-repelling.
