Fire Service Experience
As a twenty-year veteran of the fire service and a seven-year company officer, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) is a leading organization in the fire service. During this time, I have gained valuable knowledge and experience. My greatest strengths are interpersonal skills, administrative skills, and the ability to adapt. Some of the challenges I expect to encounter are, no longer working on a four-person crew and now managing a battalion of thirty plus personnel.

Working in a diverse high level organization with high standards, allows my outgoing personality to provide a courteous, friendly, and sympathetic service that mirrors the departments norms and values. I use My interpersonal skills every day to be a leader, educator, and a manager. I lead by example, using best and safest practices educating my crews and the public for operational readiness which ultimately leads to improved customer service. I pride myself on being a good manger by employing compassion, good communication skill and a common sense approach.

I am proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Knowing how to navigate these programs gives me confidence. As a battalion chief, I will be able to help out my superior officers and subordinates with projects such as issue papers, update standard operating procedures, and incident action plans.

At age fourteen, I learned how to adapt and overcome as my parents immigrated to the United States. This left me no choice but to quickly acclimate to a new culture while learning English. I continue to embrace this skill as it has payed big dividends working in a dynamic fire service organization. The position of battalion chief is very fluid, it requires you to constantly change and adapt to variable situations. The quality of being able to adapt comes naturally to

The proper management of a Fire and Emergency Services (FES) organization is the essential task of the chief of the department. In order to properly management the FES, the chief must have a clear plan of what is going to be performed in order to manage the department. This plan is sometimes referred to as a strategic plan. The overall objective of a strategic plan is to establish goals for the department and specific outcomes, develop policy, and plans. If a fire department does not have a strategic plan, it has no vision for the future and provides a high level of uncertainty to the members and the community (Strawderman, 1999). A strategic plan must be the guiding document for improved and anticipated changes in services and overall management of the department.…

Wildland firefighters courageously face tremendous peril with each fire they extinguish. There have been many fatalities of good, hard workers who were just doing their job. Deaths can be averted however, if every member of every crew follows The Ten Standard Firefighting Orders and The Eighteen Watchout Situations. These two lists of commands and warnings were developed by a task force in nineteen fifty seven to prevent any casualties during fighting of wildland fires. They are modeled in part by general orders followed by the United States Armed Forces and the research of sixteen tragedy fires. If always followed correctly and memorized, danger can be avoided to a certain extent. Today I’m going to talk about Standard Firefighting Order number eight, “Give clear instructions and be sure they are understood.”…

Did you know that the earliest form of firefighting took place in Rome in 24 B.C? After almost being destroyed by unruly conflagrations, Rome created a fire department consisting of about 7,000 paid firefighters. Their fire crews responded to and fought fires, and also patrolled the streets with the authority to fine anyone who disobeyed the fire prevention codes (Hashgan). The major piece of firefighting equipment the Roman's used was the bucket, which was passed from hand to hand to deliver water to the fire. Additionally, they used an ax, which was utilized to remove the fuel and prevent the spread of fire, as well as to make openings that would allow heat and smoke to escape a burning building. Furthermore, in major conflagrations long hooks with ropes were used to pull down buildings in the path of an approaching fire to create firebreaks. And finally, when explosives were available, the Roman's would use them to also form firebreaks (Hashgan). Now that we know the very beginnings of the fire service, let's explore its creation in America.…
