Firetone In Liberia
What occurred in Liberia with Firestone, to me, is complicated. On one side, if you think about the business aspect, if Firestone had abandoned the plantation and waited out the civil war that was occurring, they would have lost a lot of profit. Firestone needed the Liberian plant because it provided a substantial amount of rubber and they had already invested a lot in the plant. However, on the other side Firestone was seen as a source of revenue and support for Taylor's army. Firestone addressed Taylor as President and conducted business through him. They also paid income tax to Taylor. In my opinion it seems wrong to do business with a man who killed many, just for the sole purpose of continuing to make money.
Firestone, at first, was

A frail and hard-working family doing all they can to help out with their community is seen in the short story “The Firewood Gatherers,” by Thierry Mallet. The narrator is at his camp when he sees three people in the distance on a hill. Fuelled by curiosity, he climbs the hill in hope he will encounter them. In a matter of time, he finds the three figures, who turn out to be a very old woman accompanied by two young girls. The three women are gathering firewood for their own campground, but the narrator notices odd movements from all three of them. He concludes that the old woman is blind, and the two girls are deaf and mute. Despite their disabilities, the three women muster up all their strength and exemplify that everyone can help with community affairs and contribute to their people.…

The Triangle Fire was a horrible event which caused deaths of workers who were working at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. This factory was a sweatshop. A sweatshop was a place where people worked for long hours with low pay, and they worked in very poor conditions. People who worked here were there for the money that they needed. They were immigrants, young women, and children. They may have been doing this to support their family. Poor conditions and a few other things caused many deaths in this fire. Also there was a policy from the government called the laissez faire. This policy said that the government can't interfere with the business operations. This was favored by the business because then they could do whatever they wanted to. The business could have horrible conditions for the workers…

The main purpose of this company being in the Congo is to collect ivory. They used the natives of the Congo as slaves to help them collect more ivory. In part one, the narrator stated that “ They grabbed what they could get for the sake of what was to be got” (p.70). This quote connects to the company’s greed because the narrator is using the slaves as a reflection of the company’s desperation for ivory. They grab as much ivory as they can for themselves is also referring that the company is trying to collect as much ivory as they can in their pockets in order to gain profits. Moreover, The uncle of the manager suggested to hang the Russian trader after finding out that the Russian trader was a competitor to the company in getting ivory. The uncle stated that “ We will not be free from unfair competition till one of these fellow is hanged for example...get him hanged! (p.104) The uncle’s greed for ivory led him into thinking that all ivory in the Congo is for the company and no one else can touch it. Also, greed made him resolving the problem of the company by using violent even though he knows that it will cost him his job. This proves that the uncle’s greediness made him lose his basic morals. He could not think of any other plan to get rid of the Russian trader without involving…

On June 30, 2013 a wildfire began that proved to be the most deadly wildfire in over 50 years. The wildfire was started by a strike of lightning just outside the city of Yarnell, AZ. The Prescott Fire Department 's elite group of firefighters, who were called Granite Mountain Hotshots, were called in to contain the fire. While attempting to contain the fire around Yarnell, the winds changed directions, and picked up speed. This caused the fire to circle around the firefighters, cutting off their escape route. Based on one of Douglass’s articles, his viewpoints on slavery and the Civil War were fair towards President Lincoln. He believes that government officials aren’t taking action against rebels who are fighting to keep slavery alive. Douglass once said in his writing, “Thus far we are contented with trimming off the leaves and branches, and leaving the trunk and roots of rebellion firmly fixed in the soil, ready to gather new sap, and to sprout forth again with renewed vigor.” The meaning behind this powerful metaphor is that taking minor actions against rebellions will only add…

In the years that followed Stanley would work the native people endlessly in an attempt to build up a transportation system for the natural resources being harvested. He would go on to build several stops along the Congo River that could be used as different trading poss as well as a road that would later evolve into a railroad line. Unfortunately the workers were in a very different class than the European explorers, they were forced into the labor, and even those who chose that line of work were shamed and forced into chains making it clear that they were lesser of importance or value than the explorers. Since slave hunters had constantly been raiding villages in the past, the tribes were too weak to try and resist and here was not centralized government or military to stop the intrusions. (page 39) Although these ports were able to transport goods and brought lots of profit to the Leopold, the local people of the Congo never saw a penny of the money they worked…

On August 19, 1910 the Big Burn in the Rocky Moutains began, recorded as the largest and most destrustive fire, in North America. At the time the United States fire service was only five years old, with very little experience and preparation to handle such a large forest fire. It destroys an area the size of Connecticut within a matter of 36 hours, equaling more than three-million acres of forest, and $1 billion worth lost in timber. There were atleast 78 firefighter fatalities, however it is unknown how many more died soon afterwards, due to the effects of smoke inhalation and other long term side effects. During that summer the weather was extremely dry, and without any rain for 3 months many small sparatic fires began to appear, quickly growing with all the available dried fuel.…

Tubman initiated National Unification Policy and therefore the economic reforms inspired by the Open Door Policy. He tried to reconcile the interests of the native tribes with those of the Americo-Liberian elite, and increased foreign investment in Liberia to stimulate economic growth. These policies led to the crowning accomplishment of the Liberian economy during the 1950s, once it had the second largest rate of economic process with in world. At his death in 1971 in a London clinic, Liberia had the largest mercantile fleet in the world, the world's largest rubber business, the third largest businessperson of iron ore in the world and had attracted more than US$1 billion in foreign investment. He was succeeded as President by his long-time vice president William Tolbert. The economic prosperity of Liberia at this time would unleash political dissent with the autocratic rule of Tubman and therefore the True Whig Party, leading to the overthrow of the True Whig oligarchy in 1980 by Samuel Doe. This would also destroy the economic prosperity of Liberia's golden…
