first day of school
My palms were sweaty, my legs were sore, and my arms were heavy. Fear started taking over. I was walking into my first school. I was afraid how I would do. It was a big building with a large compound wall. I forced up a weak smile as I left my parent. I took a deep breath and started walking towards the main entrance. As a small child I could not feel stable at the sight of the building. I thought to myself, why were so many people around me. Most of them were running around, zooming past me like racing cars, missing me by tiny fractions. I felt so alone, like a stray dog lost in the middle of a big city. All I wanted was to be home again.
As I walked down the hallway I almost urinated in my pants. I was not familiar with such atmosphere earlier. With anxiety on one hand and fear on the other, I reached for the door knob, opening it slowly. Everyone’s eyes were on me as I entered the room. From a distance, it looked like the people were ants. Without paying attention to them, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered, “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little. The class teacher asked my name and whereabouts. My class teacher was very gentle. He encouraged me and treated me kindly. I felt a bit nervous in the new environment. The boys looked at me with wonder and smiled. Some of them gathered rounded me. They laughed at me and made fun of me. A few sympathized with me and befriended me. The bell for interval rang. At first, I was not able to understand why there were so many teachers. The class teacher left our class and another teacher came. The teacher wrote some words on the blackboard. He taught simple arithmetic’s. Then the bell rang. Another class began.

I dreaded the alarm that woke me up at 6:30 in the morning. It was as loud as a screaming toddler that could be heard for miles. I groggily got out of bed and got ready for my first day of school. It was a weird feeling not putting on a uniform like I had been for the past nine years, but I also enjoyed that freedom. The nervousness became more and more intense as I could closer and closer to campus. When we arrived, I got out of the car, and watched my dad drive off to go take my younger sister to school. There was no going back now; I had no other choice than to walk through those doors. I felt like my throat was in my stomach. I noticed some familiar faces, and I walked towards them. While I was approaching my friends, a senior, facing toward me, walked passed. He must have been at least six feet tall, which was incredibly intimidating for me at just over five feet. I was not used to the fact that I’d potentially have classes with these giants. Additionally, the array of new teachers, and having to learn all of their teaching styles and things they did or did not tolerate was hard in…

My anxiety flutted around in my chest and gripped each breath like a vice. The daunting and steep steps danced in my mind making the simple task of walking up stairs more difficult than the impossible task to run a mile in a minute. Next, a boy pushed the door open behind him almost as an afterthought, but in my chaotic mind it was the best thing all morning to happen. On the dreadful first day of school, chivalry was not dead, or at least that’s how I was able to comprehend his actions. I glanced around unsurely before starting to slowly walk towards the freshman commons; each eye that meets mine screamed enthusiasm.…

I walked into the classroom to see all my new pupils, I was nervous at first but then Miss Maudie introduced me to the class and everything was fine. I wrote my name on the board and told them what it said and where I am from. The class just murmured back to me. I started the day by reading the children a story about cats, I think they liked it but then again some of them did seem immune to imaginative literature. After reading I went to the blackboard and printed the alphabet in large capitals. I wasn’t surprised that everyone knew what they were seeing as most of the first grade had failed last year and where now back again for me to teach them.…

“Hello,” said a kind face to me as I entered my first eighth-grade class at a new school. “Hello,” I said back, not knowing how to take the gesture. I walked into a classroom full of new faces. Everyone was gawking at the new kid. I thought to myself, “is it what I’m wearing? Do I look weird? Should I say something?” I did nothing but go to my assigned seat, and sat quietly just like I did on the bus months prior. As I sat in silence, I listened intently as the teacher floated across the room while calling roll. When I heard my name called, I tried to muster up the courage to address myself in a casual way, but I’m sure that it came out as a nervous “here.” As she finished roll call, each student was handed a mountain of forms and papers. Then the class slowly transformed into a parade of shouts and laughter. Everyone was welcoming each other back, except for me. I sat there in silence examining everyone.…

The big cars were rushing by so fast. They were so loud, and I was so scared. I walked down the alley to hide behind the big green metal dumpster with all the rancid smelling trash inside of it. I tucked my tail and tried to stay warm as I hid from the cars and those villainous humans walking past. As it got darker, I started to doze off. I tried to stay as awake and on guard as I could, but I was just so exhausted. I had been running around all day trying to find a safe place after I had finally escaped the dreadful place I was in, even though I left so many of my friends behind.…

There I was, sitting in the middle of the class looked upon by every single student in the entire room. I had a feeling of total awkwardness and embarrassment, and my mind went totally blank. There, like a terrible dream I never thought would come to pass, as time went by like a broken hourglass. I stared, as if I had seen the future through my eyes, as the teacher stared right back at me with her look of despise. She knew deep inside that I was unaware of her dialogue, yet she simply waited in silence for my response. Words began to spiral in my head as I searched for the one phrase that would satisfy my instructor. I threw a quick glance at the other students, and watched as they snickered and babbled off to their friends in a dialect that confused me. I heard myself mutter, “I don’t understand,” each word gradually rolling off my tongue. Awkward silence.…

I hadn’t eaten, the only ‘food’ in the house was ramen noodles- and Lord knows how sick of those I was. I had been sleeping on the small and red and rock-hard loveseat for the past two weeks because my bed was taken apart and leaned up against my lime green wall. The TV was permanently off- it will never be turned back on in this house. The next time I watch CSI Miami or Law & Order I’ll be in a different world. A world where people don’t have to drive twenty minutes away to get to any part of civilization- a common task when you reside in the country. A world where my living space will shift from a four bedroom, three floor, farm house with eleven acres and horses and chickens and a giant garden, to a small, two bedroom, tiny living room, cubicle. A world where my community- everything I know- will be no longer there for me to fall back on. I won’t have my friends, my (ex)step-family, my school, my teachers, or my animals. The only people I knew were the ones that I’ve been in the same class with since third grade. There was only 200 people in my K-6th grade elementary school and although it was incredibly small, it was nice. But now I would be in a class of 323 students- in my grade alone. This thought was terrifying and exciting all at…

As my mom drove her car to school, she spoke encouraging words to me. As soon as we arrived at school, my hands felt clammy. My mind raced so much that I could not think about anything else but how school would be like. I slowly walked toward the two massive school doors squeezing my mother's hand. My body screamed inside as I entered the school premises with my mother and older brother. My mind raved with many thoughts as of how I was going to make friends, or if the teacher was going to be mean and cruel. I lacked confidence of how I was going to do on that day.…

It was the first day of the new school term 2012. The moment that I am looking forward for the past 2 months during school holiday finally arrived. Feeling ebullient, I said to myself "Yes!!!
