First Reflective Journal of my first clinical experience
Elizette Merville
11/07/14

On august 2013; I remember I was so happy to start the nursing program. At the same time I was scared of the road ahead of me. That is exactly how I felt Monday at clinical. I am very happy to be able to go to the hospital due to the fact I’ am going to be face with real life situations. At the same time I’ am praying for no error anytime. I acknowledge this is a learning experience for me so I will not be so hard on myself. I will ask questions when I’m not sure or do not know something. My two wonderful professors are going to push me to make sure I learn all the skills I need to know.

The first thing we did was learn how to use the system. Learn where to go look up our patient information. We also learn where to do our documentation. For some reason I was having difficult time locating some of the informations. I know with more practices I will become better at using the system. The second thing we did was ? over the policies and produces. To ensure we know how the hospital wants us to carry our self and do things the right way. I learned that there are two different hands restricts. After then that is when we was taking further back to look at some different IV pumps and how to operate them. To me I believe that is my biggest challenge yet. I would love to start an IV and operate the pump all by myself. We also learned the proper way to introduce our self to the patients. I like how the hospital has the patients’ room set up. Due to the fact there is a broad that tell the medical staff about the patient and the reason for the hospital stay. The hospital seems like they have many patients with different kind of illness. After that we were able to take a tour around the department. We had met different nurses who were ready to train us. I just hope that when we start next Monday they have an open mind and let us help them. The clean holding was well ordinaries, which will make it less stress full to find materials. Due

It's very important to always double check your work, You should make it a habit, so you don't make any mistakes. Always make sure you fill out paper work right the first time, Each person who enters information in a medical chart must make sure the notations are mistake-free, complete and tell a story. Any missing, or excessive, detail can affect charges on a final bill and determine how much is covered by insurance. A patient should never get charged if a physician makes the mistake, and always be careful with double billing you don't want to get billed twice. Any errors that happen can get lost or delayed. Mini-Clinic Interview

I appreciate that rather than running the Mini-Clinic, yourself, you asked the three of us to run it, which gave us more of a leadership role. Although you were there to answer any questions we could not answer, you gave us the independence to make decisions. I found that highly valuable, as we will not always have a teacher/preceptor telling us what we need to do next – the correct action. The only component that I could use information on, but that we discussed during the experience, would be how in depth a nurse should go on a basic health screening. Because we were not at a hospital, the individuals did not come to us for a specific health concern. Rather, they simply wanted to assist us in our learning and perceive their health status. While we could answer questions, we could not perform certain skills, such as giving medication. From what I understand, a health screening stands more as a checkpoint to perceive how an individual’s health care plan is working and whether referrals to specific doctors are…

Next, try to emulate those nurses you find to be efficient and effective. Ask questions. Offer to assist them, so you can learn by watching and doing. Hopefully you are given a preceptor who is used to working with new nurses. It helps to have someone who is experienced as a trainer, and who is patient. Overly-harsh nurse trainers only help to blow potentially good future nurses right out of the field. If you find yourself with such, do not be afraid to ask your nurse manager for a change in preceptors.…

Rotation Day 8 today I’m in processing it was a slower day than yesterday so the processer had me help with a few things. They also asked me if I could go with a phlebotomist to drop some blood to the Operation room. When we got there I noticed read lines on the floor meaning we could not pass until we had full gowns. We waited to see if there was someone we could flag since there was no one in the front office. A person came in and we told her we had a delivery she took it and we left. When we got back they had a request to draw a patient in the SSI department I didn’t know where this was so the phlebotomist asked if I wanted to go check it out so I went. I didn’t know it we had to drive since it was in another location. We went in and the patient was in the recovery room she was alert at the moment and recognized the phlebotomist right away.…

They had already attended 74 patients before I arrived in the afternoon to begin my job shadow. Since the workers have a lot of experience, it was easy for them to go through the list of patients quickly. It also surprised me that they had a portable x-ray, and it was the first time I got to see one. The x-ray was used for patients who cannot stand or leave their rooms due to problems they have. Being able to observe an x-ray being done in a patient's room was very interesting.…

This week I was in 1600, which I have not been on since my first semester. In this floor you see more post surgical patients. I liked the new environment and being exposed to different nurses and types of patients. I was able to take care of 3 patients and feel confident in what I was doing. I believe that because my preceptorship is coming up soon, I have set my mind to think more independently along with feeling more secure in my nursing skills and assessments. Furthermore, having the nurses positive feedback was very reassuring.…

The community I grew up in deep in the heart of Austin, Texas celebrated my heritage, honored differences in culture, and fostered personal growth and self-discovery. My parents, with the strong work ethic they developed on their family’s farms in Ghana, encouraged my brother and me to work hard and find ways to use my skills to be of service to others. My experiences engaging with the communities that I have lived inspire me to become a physician dedicated to finding the most effective ways to communicate with my patients and improve their health outcomes in different types of environments. I first worked in health care locally during the summer after my sophomore year of college when I volunteered at the People’s Community Clinic. It was there that I got my first look at direct health interventions through making health education materials in the…

When I arrived to Brunswick Novant Medical Center, it was a nice day, the sun was out and the flowers were in bloom down the pathway leading up to the main entrance. When I walked into the hospital, wearing my scrubs there was a cool chill to the air much different from the outside. It was pretty chilly in there and the building smelled like hand sanitizer. The main lobby was very welcoming with chairs and magazines on the little end tables. The receptionists at the desk welcomed me with an inviting greeting, “May I help you”. I went towards the hall on the left that led to the elevators that took me to the second floor, where the nurse I was going to interview worked at.…
