First Roll Play In The Classroom Analysis
On February 2, 2017, we had our very first roll play in class. Since the original roll play rooms were unavailable, we did them in the classroom. I was in a group of four with Danny, Abbie, and Aj. We all feared that we would struggle with being in the listener’s position, because to be a good listener you have to understand and put all your effort into the conversation. Although, if you are playing as a role of someone’s best friend, it’s hard to understand exactly how to react and listen to the speaker’s issue. To resolve this issue, we decided to tell each other a little about what each of our issues were, and then the people who could relate the most were the ones that spoke to one another. This strategy worked very well. I was Danny’s listener and he spoke about President Donald Trump’s new immigration law. Just before this class I was in another class in which we were discussing this new law, so I had a pretty good idea of what he wanted to talk about. My issue for the role play was how we have had cockroaches in our dorm, and how I had to go about fixing it. I had Danny role play as my friend who lives in another dorm. He was a great listener and we were able to have a good ten minute discussion. I feel that as a listener and speaker I could improve some of my non-verbal’s. For example, throughout the whole time I was speaking and listening I was swaying in my chair. I have always done this, whether I’m at work at my desk, or in class listening to my teacher. I have a hard time sitting still. But from many of my feedback forms, my group members noticed this, and I understand now that swaying my chair back and forth can be very distracting to my partner in the role play. I plan on working on this for my next role play. Maybe I will get lucky and there will not be and spinning chairs in our new role play

    On June 15, 2012, President Barak Obama gave a brief speech on a new Department of Homeland Security Immigration policy. This new policy will benefit thousands of undocumented students living here in the United States that were brought by their parents since they were young children from their native home. A policy called the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. As President Obama mentioned in his speech about what undocumented students are, he mentioned part of a sentence that got to me. President Obama stated the following, “They are Americans in their heart, in their minds, in every single way but one, on paper” (Obama). This is very true in my point of view, as I have realized exactly just that growing up. As a young girl, I was never told whether or not I was documented or not; whether I was a citizen of where I was growing up or I wasn’t. I was never worried about my legal status in the United States. My main focus has always been school and progressing to be a well-educated citizen that is part of the United States. That’s how I see myself as, as of today; a citizen of the United States, perhaps not in paper, but in heart. This is the place where I have been raised since the age of two, till today at the age of 17 even knowing that I am undocumented. I love the fact knowing I’m Mexican and will always be by my culture and by a large majority of my family, but that’s not the place I know by heart or grew up. That is not the country that has helped my progress as an individual. It is here in the United States where my hopes and dreams are at for a better future.
