I remember it like it was yesterday. Standing in the middle of millions of people, jamming to great music, and freezing as the temperature got colder. When Jimi Hendrix came out to play the National Anthem; some people loved it yet, some people were not. During that song people separated by their opinions. You have the people who love rock, who loved Jimi Hendrix, and the people who admired everything he did. Then, you have the people who think distorting the National Anthem was wrong and shouldn't be aloud. That was how the first Woodstock Festival started. I felt personally impacted by Isay’s Ted Talk because I have also gone through the difficult journey of acceptance of a loved one’s differences. As a member of the LGBT community, the Stonewall riots are a particularly interesting historical event for myself and the rest of my community. The fact that Isay was able to draw inspiration from the Stonewall riots is very inspirational to me. I absolutely adore the idea of Story Corps because I believe that it has to power to unite people who would otherwise not be informed about a perspective, other than their own. Transcribing human history is of the utmost importance if we wish for civilization to persist. However, Isay is adding a nuance to the traditional historical archives, and that is the…

Hey Xoe, please talk to your following about Standing Rock. More people need to know about what’s happening, because it’s horrible. It seems as though our native people are losing once again. Police are tormenting them on their land. I’m not sure if you know about what is happening, but I feel like it’s important to know, or to educate as many people as possible on the subject. A short summary of this situation would be that there is a an oil pipeline being put through the Standing Rock reservation in North and South Dakota. If you didn’t know oil pipelines have high rates of leaking which would cause the Native Americans living there not be able to use the natural water sources such a lake and rivers. The pipes also will most likely exploded,…

We reside in a city notoriously known for its insane nightlife, so growing up here in Las Vegas has not always been the most enjoyable experience due to the numerous age restrictions downtown with little to no options for genuine fun other than your basic mall or movie trip, thus leaving every kid yearning to be 21 in order to have a bit of freedom. But what if I told you about The Rocky Horror Picture Show? A kooky tradition that has been around in here in Las Vegas for 14 years and known to the world for the past 42, that has brought unity and self expression to its audiences you too can be a part of.…

To some, Woodstock was one of the biggest rock concerts ever, but to many others it was a huge historical event that changed America and its views on the Vietnam War forever. Woodstock was one of the biggest anti-Vietnam War movement to ever exist, it also marked the beginning of the Vietnam War as well. The concert was originally supposed to be held in a town named Woodstock, New York on Max Yasgur's 600 acre area, but was transferred to Bethel, New York because there was not enough room for the crowd expected(Pendercast 862). Woodstock was a gathering of all the now called “hippies” who were the icons of American counterculture. This group of people believed that they could change the world that was rooted in hatred, war, and greed, by focusing on loving each other. The culture that the Woodstock Youth was rejecting was that of their parents, which included radical segregation and support of the Vietnam War. This was an example of counterculture because in 1969, 50% of the nation supported the Vietnam War. The rock and roll was played at the festival was also a symbol of the overpowering counterculture and served as the engine for cultural and social reform movements like these. Rock and roll is also seen as an expression of the youth revolt against conformity and adulthood.…

“Best part about being a former President is you do what you want to and if you don’t want to do something, you don’t have to.” Those were the words of former President, Jimmy Carter as he told a story of a young boy who told his father that he wanted to be a “former President.” Mr. Carter and his wife arrived at Grand Rapids Community College to speak for the Diversity Lecture Series to help welcome the 100th birthday of the institution. I personally had the privilege of attending this momentous occasion thanks to one of my professors. This event was really my first opportunity to listen and watch an American politician outside of the scripted big stage.…
