“Formosa” ― a beautiful island named by its Portuguese founders, this is Taiwan, the country where I came from. Taiwan has a long rich culture and art history as a Dutch and Japanese colony and also has Native Taiwanese. It caused me to have diverse cultural and art background and decide to become a designer. To me, art is like a bridge. It communicates with people, no matter their gender, race, or age. People learn and inspire by it.
To help me achieve this goal, I participate in several arts-related activities. I took art classes when I was young, also my parents and I always visited art museums on weekends. In the middle school, I led a team in a lantern competition during the Chinese Lunar Moon Festival. I designed a rooster lantern and led the team members to build the frame and decorate this lantern. In the end, we won a creativity award. It was a nice experience! After I graduated form middle school, I came to American to attend high school. In the high school, I joined the photography club and art and design club. I also took art class and honors interior design for two years. In my junior year, I represented my school in a Technology Students Association competition. I participated in the interior design competition, in which we had to design a locker room for a football team with a limited budget and space. We also had to choose main colors and a mascot in the design. Although I did not win this competition, I had a great experience participating in that project.
When people first hear about interior design, they may think how to make a gorgeous room or how to decorate a special shop to attract consumers. For me, interior design is not only like these, but also a good way to help people and bring advantages for the society. For instance, as a country develops, a lot of problems are coming.
