In order for healthcare providers to deliver the best outcomes to patients, it is essential for providers to be able to work as a team. An individual is not able to provide the quality of care that a patient needs on his or her own. Treating patients is becoming more complicated and time consuming. For example, a patient comes into the Emergency Room and is unresponsive and unable to breath. The physician on call determined that the patient needs to incubated and placed on a ventilator. That physician would rely on help from a nurse in order to carry out the procedure. The physician would need to communicate with the nurse so that all precautions are avoided and the procedure is completed before the patient dies. If members of a healthcare …show more content…

When working as a team, members feel uncomfortable exposing their flaws because they think someone might think less of them. In order for a team to be successful, members of a team should have predictive and vulnerability trust with each member of the team. Team members should be willing to accept the strengths and weaknesses of their fellow members and be encouraged to help one another. The second dysfunction of a team is the fear of conflict. When working as a team, members are going to disagree with one another and have different ideas on how to accomplish tasks. Conflict is often avoided in order to keep peace among team members.     The features of effective team performance are set out in Brian Tuckman’s phases of team development theory, ‘Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing.’ This outlines the phases that a team will go through in order to become effective and reach maturity. At the ‘Forming’ stage of team development individual roles and responsibilities are unclear and each member of the team is concerned to avoid conflict with each other. From this point the team will go through the ‘Storming’ phase which is when they start to conflict as individuals put forward ideas which will be challenged by others in a bid to gain power and position over others. Interaction is important, as it shows how team members work together to accomplish tasks and perform effectively. Communication is especially important to coordinate and cooperate with other team members to achieve collective goals. Once individuals recognize the importance of communication, they become aware of how successful communication can be.
