Candidate Holthe's five paragraph order was clear and concise. It was easy to understand and flowed well. However, he did brief parts as more of a check in the box without applying them to the execution. For example, he briefed hand and arm signals when they were clearly communicating utilizing voice. Initially he identified security but he then told them it would not be necessary so he did not establish it. SNC briefed a concise scheme of maneuver and his tasks were clear in order to accomplish the mission. SNC did fail to make the necessary adjustments to his plan in a timely manner. When it was clearly evident that his plan was not working he did not make an adjustment until eight minutes into the execution phase. SNC did not move…
Candidate Hutchins gave an average brief, at times he stumbled through his brief, often using filler words such as “um” or “uh”. SNC lacked confidence and sounded unsure of the information he presented to his subordinates. Even though he displayed a lack of confidence his brief did include all the elements needed to execute the mission. SNC gave a detailed scheme of maneuver stating the different formations that will be utilized upon reaching each tactical control measure. The tasking statements were detailed and had specific roles for each team member. During the execution phase, SNC moved quickly to the objective but failed to maintain adequate dispersion within the team. Once they reached the objective the point man halted the team and reported…
Candidate Hintz successfully gave his brief to his fire team while outlining all the needed information for them to have an understanding of the mission at hand. Although, his brief was not completely filled with extensive detail, it was clear and concise enough for his team members to know what was needed to be done. While negotiating the obstacle, he guided and controlled his team as needed and made decisions on changes to the plan as required when they were faced with hazards and roadblocks. SNC performed at a standard level and was able to keep his team moving toward the objective until their time expired. SNC performed up to the standards that would be expected of a candidate during this point in…
Candidate Summerour provided a five paragraph order that contained most of the needed information to carry out the mission, but not much more and not necessarily in the proper order. SNC’s brief was very choppy and SNC seemed overwhelmed with the amount of information he needed to organize and disseminate. His scheme of maneuver was hasty and was briefed after the tasks. The tasks assigned did not have a purpose. SNC’s execution went well until the one point of friction, the simulated casualty, occurred. SNC did not give orders to neutralize the enemy for a few moments. During this time his sense of security was lacking. He left the casualty where he fell and took the rest of the fireteam to assault the enemy, having no assistance or cover…

In late June 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia passed through western Maryland and invaded Pennsylvania. General Lee believed that by invading the North, he could draw the Union Army of the Potomac away from their defenses and force them to come after him. He also assumed the people of the North would be so demoralized if the Union were to lose another major battle, especially if it was fought on Northern soil, that President Abraham Lincoln would be forced to negotiate a settlement of the Civil War. On 01 July 1863, then Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, and his 20th Maine received word to begin movement to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where the Union Army had already engaged the Confederates. After marching more than 100 miles in five days with only two hours of sleep, COL Chamberlain and his men arrived on 02 July 1863 and immediately began preparing to establish a defensive position on top of Little Round Top, the extreme left of the Union line. The hill, which dominated the Union position, was previously left unprotected do to a failure in communications. Using the six steps of the operations process, this study will demonstrate COL Joshua Chamberlains’ ability to properly use mission command which ultimately led to the Union’s victory at Little Round Top.…
In one example during the Tarmiyah operation, Col Pasquarette planned an operation for a couple of weeks and then briefed Lt Col Saad and his commander on it. After the briefing Col Pasquarrette was not open to inputs from the Iraqi side on how to execute the operation. The problem was the Iraqis should have been invited at the start to help plan it. Lt Col Payne failed because he did not understand Col Pasquarrette’s goals of the operations. Col Pasquarrette did not want violence of the Iraqi method. The other example is Col Pasquarrette alienated the Iraqis when he put up the barriers between the two camps. If Lt Col Payne would have understood his objectives, he could have briefed Lt Col Saad the reasons behind the barrier. The one thing to alleviate the situation between the two parties was what Col Pasquarrette accomplished after the Lt Col Payne got relieved. He brought the MiTT team together, cleared the air, explained his position, and listened to their grievances. If this happened sooner, a better environment would have…
In both speeches being analyzed, there is a common theme of “ if you don’t work together then you won’t win,” and “don’t let anything come between you and your team.” This is one of the most important elements of a team,…

During this period of assessment, Stark discerned weaknesses in the defensive positions and quickly helped consolidated and fortify the positions on the extreme left. Despite these efforts, the lack of coordination among some of the militia elements was evident, “to be plain, it appears to me that there was near more confusion and less command” (Kurtz, pg. 615).…

Lauber states that this myth is probably the most damaging myth in today’s skill-driven team environment. The idea behind this myth is the “belief that execution from a team demands adrenaline surges, rousing speeches and lots of shouting” (Lauber, 2013, p. 29). With this statement, Lauber is stating that Bill Pullman did not have to stand out on a platform, in front of an F-16, giving the “best speech ever”, to motivate the crowd in the movie Independence Day – a quick and simple mission brief would have sufficed. In reality, these types of speeches really do have their place – “Military units and sports teams are perfect for this type of leadership” (Lauber, 2013, p.…

This team was a temporary team as it was only formed to complete a task. Throughout the task each team member was motivated to contribute to the success of the task. Throughout the task the leadership was excellent as Boris the leader of this task allocated roles as soon as he becomes leader. Firstly we were supposed to choose the leader, Boris got the most votes for being the leader thus he had the responsibility to allocate us our roles immediately. Before producing our slides we were supposed to produce plans so that every person in the team knew what he was doing. The three steps were to; allocate roles in the team, start slides and the…
