The purpose of Stephanie Hanes’s “Little Girls or Little Women? The Disney Princess Effect” is to bring awareness to the problem of increasing sexualization of little girls. While this trend is widely noted in the media and consumer market, it is a growing concern for parents and early childhood specialists, as it is taking a toll on the girls’ mental and emotional development. It starts when girls are young and goes unnoticed, but this trajectory eventually becomes evident. Stephanie Hanes is a freelance journalist who has written many U.S. publications. This article first appeared in the Christian Science Monitor where parents of little girls are her intended audience. Hanes not only presented to them the problem but also solutions to this ongoing predisposition. Hanes succeeds at proving her argument through providing anecdotes that appeal to her audience emotionally, logically, and ethically.…

I chose the book, “Knock Me Up, Knock Me Down,” by Kelly Oliver. She points out her view that pregnancy was once looked upon as shameful in the middle nineteenth century, but because of Hollywood films, we are now able to change the way of how society use to think about it. Because of Hollywood films, pregnancy is now looked as beautiful and cute, but it also shows our fear of pregnancy.…

I believe that the United States needs a new constitution. People have adjusted to the original constitution for this long, so why change now? The United States needs a new constitution because The Constitution should be more sexually equal, including women in all the amendments. Views of politicians have changed. The United States’ population has become more diverse.…

I believe that the second amendment, the right to keep and bear arms, has been the most important in protecting citizens from possible governmental abuse because this amendment assures that citizens will always have a way of defending themselves against any risks or threats to their freedom. This amendment is a reminder to the government that they cannot and should not try to stop citizens from having the right to bear arms. I chose this right because I believe that without the second amendment the first amendment would not really make much sense because without the right to bear arms would mean citizens does not have the right to their freedom either. If the second amendment was taken away it would have such an enormous and negative impact on society. The crime rate would increase drastically because the criminals would know unquestionably that citizens are not able to defend their selves. The second amendment also gives citizens a similarity to have with the government, because officers are given the right to bear arms no matter what, and some cops use this amendment to their advantage so having protection should be the citizens right. This amendment has affected me personally because I have witnessed my aunt putting it into good use after she went through the proper training to obtain her legal license to bear arms. Someone broke into her house a while back without killing the robber she shot him in the left knee to assure that he would be caught by the cops. Her right to bear arms came into good use because if there was no such thing as a second amendment, she would have not been able to defend herself from the perpetrator who entered her home.…

With now having knowledge of the death penalty and its history and what came out of it, we will now focus on the different execution methods and what they entail. “In Indiana prior to 1913, all executions were by hanging. From 1913 through 1994 all executions were by the electric chair. Since 1995, all executions have been by lethal injection. Current executions procedure is found at the Indiana code 35-38-6 and requires that the lethal injection execution takes place inside the walls of the Indiana state prison at Michigan City before sunrise.” (office, 1998) In the 37 states and federal government that currently have the death penalty statutes, five different execution methods are prescribed, and they are as followed: Lethal injection, Electrocution, Lethal Gas, Firing Squad, and Hanging. “The vast majority or jurisdictions provide execution by lethal injection. Twenty Jurisdictions provide the alternative methods of execution, contingent upon the choice of the inmate” (office, 1998)…

There is not much of a difference between Erik Weihenmayer and a sighted mountaineer. It takes bravery, mental toughness, and a survival instinct to climb dangerous mountains. The only difference between Erik and a sighted climber is that Erik listens to a bell attached to a fellow climber. He also uses custom made poles and his partners shout out terrain descriptions. He wants people to realize that even though he is blind, there are not that many differences when undertaking challenges like climbing Mount Everest. Erik believed that he could successfully climb Mount Everest and he did.…

I am doing this first short paper on language and social identity. “Language is a systematic set of symbols and signs with learned and shared meanings within a culture”. It can be written, spoken, and with gestures or signs. This article is about how language shapes culture in a variety of ways. Language is the key component to a culture, without it there is no culture. Every culture has their own language, each of us might speak differently but doesn’t necessarily mean we think differently. In education, is mainly where we learn the language in whatever culture you’re from. We are taught how to speak since 2 years old and in that that’s how we are identified on what language we use. I as an American we are taught to try to speak more than one language, that’s why there offer course at school to learn to different language like Spanish or French. From experience I believe that learning another language is hard because not only you have to learn the language you have to learn the culture. So I believe it goes hand and hand with each other. You’re identified on how you look and what language you speak. “Culture refers to people’s learned and shared behaviors and beliefs”. So what is a language? A language is learned by a group of certain people and shared by a certain group of people. That is culture. Languages, of course, are human creations, tools we invent and hone to suit our needs. Simply showing that speakers of different languages think differently doesn't tell us whether it's language that shapes thought or the other way around. As we uncover how languages and their speakers differ from one another, we discover that human natures too can differ dramatically, depending on the languages we speak. Language is the single most important thing in a culture and how do we learn it,…
