‘Touching the Void’ is a documentary based on the true story of two mountaineers climbing in the Peruvian Andes where one of the climbers falls and sustains a serious leg injury, making him unable to carry on. It is constantly reverting to the interviews of Joe Simpson and Simon Yates to concede a much better engaging atmosphere for the audience. Also, through the…

Bill Bryson and Katz do not conquer the entire Appalachian Trail, but more importantly, they are able to conquer and overcome personal flaws while trying to do so. Bryson and his friend, Katz set out for a journey, their main intentions being to complete the Appalachian trail, and reconnect with nature. Throughout their journey, Bryson and Katz experience grueling days of long hikes and stormy weather, sometimes reaching below zero. Even though this seems miserable, and at times it was, the challenges helped both men to better themselves. Katz and Bryson gained a sense of pride by experiencing a harsh and deep pain, when hiking for long hours each day. By the end of their journey, they had become much more “slender and fit”(274). Even though they didn’t reach the end of the trail, physical strength was something they were able to leave with, and feel proud of. Looking back on the hardship and adversity the men faced was a significant accomplishment in itself, knowing that they were able to push through it, no matter how difficult.…
My feet ached as I passed through the automatic screen door to the snow filled Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport parking lot. The cool, crisp air stung my face, but my smile remained. Seven slow years have passed since I visited Crested Butte, Colorado, and I have been craving to return the moment I left. The towering mountains, blissful blue sky, and blinding white snow from the piercing sun makes Colorado a place like no other. I stood waiting on the icy concrete for my dad to pull around Baby Blue, a 1996 Chevrolet Astro van my family had nicknamed. My family visited Colorado in 2010, because my mom’s boss owns a timeshare condo, which included Baby Blue. He offered us a vacation to Crested Butte where we could have a free place to…

Music is a medium in which people can express their feelings, as well as get many strong messages across efficiently. This is seen frequently in the music industry along with many bands. take this as an initiative to spread a message they find important. The Black Eyed Peas are a band notorious for this type of social communication. This is a band that believes in social change as well as equality in the world. Many of their songs portray similar core values and express many reoccurring themes. The targeted audience of their songs is the youth. Their music promotes action for change. The Black Eyed Peas specifically call to action on certain issues such as believe the young being corrupt by society and we all must start the movement. One specific song, paired with its music video inspires many of these common threads. The song, “Where is the Love?” does an excellent job tying together many serious issues into a fluid musical piece paired with symbolic images. This music video is getting the message out that change in the world starts with the individual. With these images and sounds, The Black Eyed Peas are able to tackle and reflect on large social conflicts in a relaxing and inspiring way. “Where is the Love?” effectively touches upon may themes including, faith and hopelessness, hypocrisy and corrupted youth through images, poetic words, as well as the rhythm mood and tempo they play the music and these can be interpreted through ethos, logos and pathos. Through the Rhetorical Triangle analysis style, I will investigate what has been mentioned and how the combination of images and sounds effectively communicate many powerful messages, especially for the short amount of time. This artifact is being shared to promote a world with less racism, terrorism, war and most of all hypocrisy.…
When someone asks you what your favorite movie is, what goes through your mind? When someone asks me that question, I instantly think of specific scenes from my favorite film that induce a strong emotional response. This seems to happen when thinking about any movie I particularly like. What makes these scenes so memorable that they still emit those same emotions when just thinking about them? The answer is mise-en-scene – the visual story that is being told through setting, costumes and makeup, lighting, and staging. Bordwell and Thompson inform us, “Elements of mise-en-scene accentuate action and engage attention…Many of our most vivid memories of movies stem from mise-en-scene” (pg 112). The film Jurassic Park (1993) is a great example of how mise-en-scene can shape our experience of the film through specific components such as setting, lighting, and costuming.…
