Flame Test

Intro:
The flame test is a procedure used by chemists to identify the presence of specified metal ions, based on the color the flame that appears along with it when it 's heated.
Our flame test was in lab class, where the main aim was to tested different solid metals in the flame in order to observe the wide variety of colors those chemicals also sometimes compounds (by mixing them) they produced, the second one was to identify unknown metals based on their flame color .
Based on our chemistry classes there are two ways of getting the atoms excited:
a) Through heating ; example by using flame as in the flame test so the atom electrons can be induced to absorb energy and jump to an excited energy through jumps called ( Quantum Jump: This is when electrons jump to an excited state) the they get back to their ground state by emitting a photon , the amount of energy in that photon determines its color ;( red for the lowest energy of visible light, increasing energy through the rainbow of orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and finally violet for the highest energy of visible light.) Photons outside the visible spectrum may also be emitted, but we cannot see them as we learned before. Based on the emission spectrum of the element, the compound will turn the flame a characteristic color. This technique of using certain chemical compounds to color flames is widely used in pyrotechnics to produce the range of colors seen in a fireworks display.

b) Atomic absorption (electric discharge) : spectrometer ; by passing electric discharge : as we see the emission spectrum that shows colors of different spectrums hydrogen for example shows 4 colors …etc
Materials:
1- Benson burner
2- A wire loop ( wake sure it 's clean )
3- 4 filter papers
4- 4 Unknown test solid as directed by instructor (potassium , sodium , calcium , barium / chloride )
5- A beaker
6- diluted HCL ( to clean the wire loop with it )
7- A spatula

One of such means termed fluorescence occurs when a substance can be induced into giving off light is through absorption of a photon through light or other means of radiations. During this process, electrons are excited from their standard state. The electrons jump from their highest unoccupied orbital (HUMO) into a certain level of the unoccupied orbital (LUMO). As the electrons loose energy, they fall back to a lower orbital, thus emitting light. 1, 2…

I believe that the authors of this article mean by “dream divide” is that the distribution of income and wealth in the United States have become more unequal, which make those living in poverty have an even smaller chance of reaching their American Dream. There are many reasons why the poor people have such a hard time getting out of this situation. The first reason is the “Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) focus on moving people from “welfare to work” has led to a major decline in the numbers of households receiving benefits and a huge drop in fund assistance to the poor. The second reason is that the TANF program reaches too few people among those that are eligible for the program. This make the poor have even further chance of reaching their American Dream. The third reason is the price increase in housing, high quality child care, higher education, and health insurance. The poor will most likely not able to afford to have these services because of the shortage of the money. The fourth reason is that the subsidized housing is given to 25 percent of those who need it and the current budget proposal would cut a lot of funding for this program. As a result, more poor people will have no place to live because of the effect of the budget cut. The fifth reason is that many of the households did not receive the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), due to the fact that they don’t have a person in their households that are able to earn several thousands of dollars per year. The factors that can cause this are: lack of child care, unemployment, illness, and an improper between job demands and available skills. The last reason is that the minimum wage doesn’t increase with the rise of the inflation. The poor will have a hard time to find the sufficient income to pay bills because they do not have enough money to pay…
