Flame Test Lab Report
Introduction:
Electrons are negatively charged subatomic particles found in all atoms. Electrons have particle-wave duality, meaning they exhibit characteristics of particles, and characteristics of waves. A wave is a periodic function, meaning that the function returns to the same value at regular intervals. Also, waves have crests and troughs, meaning there are repeated local maxima (crests) and minima (troughs). Waves also have a wavelength and frequency. The wavelength is the distance in meters from one point on a wave to the next time that exact point is repeated, for example, the distance from one crest, to the next time there is a crest. This is also the distance in meters of one period of the wave. The frequency of a wave is the amount of times its wavelength or period is repeated in a unit of time. Frequency and wavelength are

Lab Questions:

Are flame tests valuable for detecting metal ions present in a mixture of metal ions?
Flame test may not be valuable for detecting individual metal ions present in a mixture of metal ions. Although each metal ion emits a different color of light, which corresponds to a certain wavelength of light, the presence of some elements may over power the flame and cause only certain wavelengths to be seen. For example, if sodium is present, it will overpower the other elements in the mixture, as the colors/wavelengths that they emit will not be visible with the yellow color from sodium. Also, it is very hard to tell which exactly which wavelengths of light are present if colors are blended.

List the metallic elements (excluding the unknowns) used in the flame tests in order of increasing energy of light emitted.
Strontium Chloride
Calcium Chloride
Lithium Chloride
Sodium Chloride
Barium Chloride
Copper (II) Chloride
Potassium

For the unknown light source, it had almost every color, so it might have been be mercury because they have similar color beams and their color from the naked eye appeared as purple, which mercury, a light blue, is very close to in terms of it's color on the spectrum. For the unknown flame crystals, it may NH4+ because the colors that appeared are very similar to the crystals. Next, chemicals have to be heated in the flame for the color to emit because heat adds energy to the substance making the electrons more excited, allowing for the electrons to transition faster. Then, the method of lighting the substance on fire is far better than using the spectroscope. Not only does the fire burn it's colors more obvious, but also, light pollution tremendously…

I started my testing with the Flame Test and did not evaporate my unknown. I just used the liquid solution to test for the flash color. Just to ensure my results were clear, I decided to evaporate my unknown on the second lab day to test for my unknown with a dry sample. After my unknown was evaporated, I could use my dry sample for the first three tests, the Flame Test, Bead Test, and Cobalt Nitrate test. As I moved the chromel wire with my dry unknown through the flame for the Flame Test, the results were indicative of Calcium.…

Has your sibling ever run off before and never returned? That predicament is exactly what happened to Georgie Burkhardt in One Came Home. Georgie’s sister, Agatha, was fed up with her family and the small town they lived in, so she disappeared. One Came Home by Amy Timberlake is a superb historical fiction novel about family plights and love. The narrative was somewhat slow at the beginning, but overall, I greatly enjoyed it.…
