Flamingos can live in many different types of areas. The areas they like to live have to have a large body of water like a lake, lagoon or swamp. The water they live in is shallow. This is because they need to be able to stand in the water and get food. However, they can live on both mountains and flat land. They live in tropical or subtropical areas. They live in areas with lots of food and water. The places they live don’t have vegetation around them normally, but they do have trees surrounding the water they are in. They live in warmer areas, but they still survive in colder areas too. They need there to be salt water for their food, but also fresh water.
Predators & Defense
Flamingos can have many problems with defending themselves and their babies. Birds of prey like vultures, Marabou Storks, eagles and kites will often try to take flamingo eggs and baby flamingos, but they will not attack adult flamingos itself. Also, wild cats, and dogs can be a problem for the flamingos. The animals will attack younger ones, but on rare occasions they will attack adult flamingos if they are weak or sick. The differences start with their height, an adult Lesser flamingo is about 3 feet tall. While, the Greater flamingo can get up to 5 feet as an adult. Their appearance is also very different, for example the Lesser flamingo has a black beak with a bit of red at the tip, and the Greater flamingo has a light pink beak with a black tip. One of the similarities of the 2 species are they both have a light pink body. The Lesser and Greater flamingos both live in Africa too.
