The story was written based on O’Connor’s own experiences living on the farm, living her faith, and her own experiences with life and death. O’Connor completed her second collection of short stories, Everything That Rises Must Converge the same year that she had passed away. Although Mary Flannery O’Connor finished her collection of short stories before she passed away, the collection was not published.
