with his daughter.
Before Fled's epiphany, he had views on education, love and wealth which strained his relationship with his daughter, Miriam. Fled views education as something that is needed and required to have a good or better life. For example in the short story it says,”Maybe he would awaken in her a desire to go to college; if not—the shoemaker’s mind at last came to grips with the truth—let her marry an educated man and live a better life.” In Fled's eyes eduction is a essential for happiness in life and for a wealthier life. He believed that without a good education you wouldn’t go far in life and it wouldn’t be successful. Fled asks a college student named Max to go on a date with Miriam in hope that they would become friends and in the the near future, possibly marriage. Fled’s determination is caused by his insecurities, experiences he had to go through. His struggles is what drives him to find someone that is of higher social class than him for his daughter. Fled’s views is what makes him do the choices he makes.
