“Flight” written by Alice Hoffman in year 2000 tells the story of what happens to young people, who are different, unique and full of dreams, when they are caged in a dull and uninspiring environment in which they do not belong.
The story takes place in the middle of a hot summer in an American town called Franconia. According to the narrator this town is an awfully drab place to live, and a place, where “no one’s imagination is working overtime”. This is the uninspiring suburb, where the narrator lives with her brother, Jason and her mother. Along with Jason’s best friend, Eugene, the narrator and Jason study at the Franconia High School.
Although Eugene is Jason’s best friend, the narrator and Eugene have a lot in common. They both seem to be really clever compared to the other students at the High School. They run a business together, in which they make other students’ term papers in exchange for money. Money, which goes for their escape from the town. Because just as well as the narrator, Eugene despises Franconia, and wants to leave.
The narrator has some difficulties at home. Not long ago, her father moved out, and her mother is still having issues, and never leaves her room. It is clear that the narrator feels different from the others. She feels like she doesn’t fit in. As a matter in fact she even says: “I hated everyone. [...] everyone else who lived and breathed inside the Franconia town limits.” She probably feels a bit lonely. And the only person, who seems to understand her, is Eugene. Like her, Eugene is a bit lonely, and she knows exactly how he feels, when he every night goes to his backyard by himself and let his horn owl fly free. Actually it’s not allowed to be outside its cage, but Eugene has another opinion. He wants his owl to be happy, and he lets it fly free. The narrator can sense, that Eugene doesn’t fit in either, and she loves the thought of having someone to share her own view of this life with.
