We have had the water of your village tested and found that the lead levels are at 22 ppb (parts per billion) which is a very high and deadly level for any drinking water. Pursuant to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulation 40 C.F.R. § 141.80 (2007) the levels should be zero, but at bare minimum can be no higher than 15 ppb. As you can see by our test results you are well above this level and are putting the lives of your citizens at risk.…
The battle between the three states Georgia, Alabama, and Florida about water rights within the Flint River Watershed has led to the decline of the important watershed. The debates started when Lake Lanier was created for water benefits, such as hydropower and flood control. However, once Georgia started using the lake as a source of drinking water, Alabama and Florida became enraged, and the current day argument was initiated. Experts state that if the three states continue to argue over water rights instead of protecting the environment and its inhabitants, the region that the watershed encompasses will endure significant and permanent damage. The focus of the disputes between the states have mainly focuses on the Chattahoochee River. The…
Flint, Michigan as of today is going through a crisis. Contaminated water has polluted the cities’ tap water. This incident consequently caused the city so much money and problems for the people especially such as health problems. This disaster is from the exposure of amount of lead that the water became poisoned with.…
A wise man once said , “ It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in an argument”. According to the article, “ How Tap Water Became Toxic in flint, Michigan “ , by Sara Ganim and Linh Tran they discuss the problem with residents from Michigan unable to obtain clean fresh water. It has left the majority of residents furious and left many with unanswered questions. Such as, when will they have healthy safe water and when will they receive clean water for the money they are paying for? However, while the mayor is ignoring the problem the residents who reside in Michigan are being affected with having health issues.…
Can you imagine getting lead poisoning from drinking what you may think is clean, filtered water? Well, that is exactly what is going on in Flint. The amount of lead found in this water is harming children and adults. Even the color doesn’t seem look right, I mean, why is this water brown? And why does it smell and taste awful? The Flint Michigan water crisis has gotten out of control and has been for the past couple of years. In class, we were showed a mini documentary on how bad this situation has gotten since the start of it in April 2014. The good news is that more attention has been brought to this and we want to see change soon for the sake of the people of Flint. According to the film, lead poisoning can bring many health problems and…
A very critical look at my current town of residence, will detect that neither water quantity or quality is a…
In her article, “Flint Water Crisis: What Happened and Why?,” Susan J. Masten (2016) first acknowledges that “many warnings and concerns were voiced regarding the use of the Flint River as a community water source.” In particular, Brian Larkin, then associate director of Michigan’s Governor’s Office of Urban and Metropolitan Initiatives, and Mike Glasgow, laboratory and water quality supervisor, cautioned that the situation is ‘less than ideal’ (Masten, 2016, 23). Masten (2016) also explains that the inadequacy of the Flint water treatment plant and the failure to install a corrosive control plan largely contributed to the crisis: “Since the Flint plant had not been fully operational in almost 50 years, was understaffed, and some of the staff were undertrained, it is not surprising that it was difficult to achieve effective treatment.” She notes that the Flint water plant did not undergo sufficient pilot testing and corrosion testing before the switch of water sources and even after the switch, there was no method for corrosion control (2016,…
The flint water crisis is a drinking water contamination crisis located in flint Michigan. This crisis started around April of 2014 and is still on going today. The cause of the crisis seems to be linked to the changing of Flints water supply from the Detroit water and sewage department to the flint river. The governer of Michigan Rick Synder approved the switch of water supply causing thousand of people to place the blame on him.…
On January 16, 2016, President Barack Obama declared the city of Flint, Michigan to be in a state of emergency due to the widespread lead poisoning of the city’s residents that later became known as the Flint Water Crisis (Southall 2016). The crisis began in April of 2014, when the officials of Flint decided that, in an effort to conserve dwindling funds, the city would switch their main water source from Lake Huron, to the Flint River (Southall 2016).…
The agricultural industry is using water that is not healthy and much of it is bad to drink…
The Flint Water Crisis began with a decision about cost as many poor ethical decisions are. Flint wanted to switch from Detroit water to the Karegnondi Water Authority (KWA) and enlisted ROWE Professional Services to facilitate this transition. The switch was said to be more reliable, equal in quality, and reduced in price compared to Detroit water (Connexions, 2013). And in order to save about $5 million in the two years that it would take to switch to the KWA, the city decided to treat water from the Flint River for use. This decision may have been made with the best of intentions as Flint is working towards a comeback, but what resulted led to great controversy.…
The country at this time was booming with population and the Flint River wasn’t a large enough source for the growing area. The change however, was only temporary. Once the industries started to go under and people started to move to obtain jobs elsewhere, Flint’s population went down again. City officials saw this as an opportunity to throw them back on the old water supply system from the Flint River. Though some cleaning of the water had been attempted, the lead pipes transporting the water are now corroded and poisoning the water…
Through the months of December to April 90% of the U.S leafy greens come from farms along the river.…
Again the state government has tried to take control of the situation and has issued filters capable of filtering out the lead in the water. However, as more cases of lead poisoning are being found in Flint it’s becoming clear that these filters are not strong enough to handle the sheer volume of lead in the water. Relief is also coming from people outside the government. Since the entire water distribution system has come into question many are relying on private donors bringing in bottled water. In order to protect themselves from the toxins people have had to change their entire way of life. The mistake of switching to the Flint river has forced its citizens to drink, cook, and even bathe with bottled…
The topic I would like to write about is a current event. This current event is the Flint, Michigan water crisis. My present assumption about the Flint, Michigan water crisis comes from what I see in the media and what I was taught in school. This assumptions is that water in Flint, Michigan contains a high percentage of lead concentration. I am not actually sure of the percentage but I know that no amount of the lead should in water. Lead should not be present in water because lead can hurt the human body. I remember learning about a set of twins living in Flint, Michigan. One of the twins became noticeably smaller than the other twin. After the mom took the twins to the doctor, she discover the smaller one failed to grow as fast as his twin…
