In the case of Díaz’s Oscar Wao, the characters learn, through the struggle of opposing masculinities, that the line between protector and predator is a tough line to walk. Oscar, seen as harmless throughout the novel, actually turns out to have major power rivaling even that of Trujillo. While he is sometimes seen as a predator in his obsession and stalking of his love interests, his intentions are pure. Trujillo is a predator in the worst way, hunting down women to satisfy his sexual urges, yet he is also depicted through conquering language as a protector of the female Dominican Republic. Yunior, although he appears to be a foil to Oscar’s emasculated characteristics, is really a blend of Oscar and Trujillo.…

For her match banquet Cassia chooses a green dress. Although Cassia chose the dress without first looking at data, it was still the dress she would most likely pick due to the information The Society had collected on her (Condie 25). Nothing is left to chance or good judgment, but rather probability and statistics. Cassia assumed that she was acting out of character by rebelling, however, the officials ran data on her showing she may have a rebellious side. These people were able to know this before Cassia herself (Condie 245). Knowing this so far in advance allowed the officials to lower Cassia’s food servings in attempts to weaken her (Condie 350) and experimented by giving her two matches (Condie 343). When exploring through the traits of characters within all well written stories or even actual people, the major changes within them began with small little choices or events and the repercussions snowballed upon each other, and rock the character down to their very core ideals. As the events that they have experienced up to that point are something that no outsider could ever comprehend. Two examples of characters who have had a series of small events compile gradually to form a major change over time are Katherine from the shakespeare play Taming of The Shrew.
