OVERVIEW OF NIGHTINGALE’S
THEORY
Florence Nightingale provided a framework for current nursing practice.
Health is achieved when an individual makes appropriate and educated decisions.
Illness is a negative reaction to a patient’s choices. Key elements of nursing=clean environment, fresh air and water, warmth, quite and a healthy diet.
Nurses are both educators and manipulators of the environment.

Home-health nurses can not only view the environment, but also have access to change it.
Home-health nurses are able to view and help modify imbalances in the environment, which could lead to a decrease in health.
WHAT ARE THE 4 METAPARADIGMS?
Environment -- external conditions of the person that affects life & development (i.e., ventilation, warmth, light, noise, cleanliness)
Individual -- the person, family, or community
(i.e. responsible, creative, & in control of their lives & health)
Health -- the state of being well and using one’s own power to the fullest
Nursing --the relief of pain and suffering that nursing provides to humanity
METAPARADIGMS
Environment – Florence Nightingale believed that the environment was the key to health.
Nurses can manipulate the environment to promote health and teach patients how to maintain a environment that promotes health.
Individual –Florence Nightingale believed that the individual/patient was directly responsible for the state of their wellness/illness. METAPARADIGMS (CONT…)
