Have you ever wondered if a film is better than its book? If you did, then you can relate to this article. The film “Charly” and the story “Flowers of Algernon” are two versions of the story about a middle age man who suffers from a learning disability that keeps him from learning simple things. He has an operation that makes him smarter. Both versions have similarities and differences such as; Charly’s feelings, plot of the story, and the story’s theme.
The plot of both the film “Charly” and the story “Flowers of Algernon,” centers around both Charlys trying to find a cure by having a surgery that would make both Charlys smarter. Yet as a result of the surgery the outcomes are different. In the
film, Charly has the help of Ms. Kinnian and the other doctors to work with him for the cure and in the book, Charly decides that he is going to outsmart his friends in the factory.
The film “Charly” and the story “Flowers of Algernon”, both use Charlie’s feelings as the main focus of the story. For example, in the movie Charly felt quite disappointed in himself. He felt less intelligent than a mouse; however, the feelings that he encounters change during the film “ Charly”, refuses to marry Ms. Kinnian. While in the story “Flowers of Algernon” Ms. Kinnian never proposed to Charlie.
The theme of both genres are similar to each other because Charly devoted his whole life to being smart and soon learned that being smart isn’t everything. Too bad that all of what he did caused him to lose his memory.
In conclusion, the story, “Flowers of Algernon” and the film “Charly” plots were different. They both had the same issue; however, the plot, theme, and author’s mood were different.
