Vonnegut wrote two books in the mid 70’s Slapstick and Breakfast of Champions, both having themes of family disintegration. These books helped Vonnegut to move past lingering emotional problems he had dealt with since childhood.

They are a married couple living in 2081 under the new laws of equality setting the standard of monotony among the population. Hazel is described as a woman of entirely average intelligence who cannot retain any amount of knowledge for an extended period of time.
