Index numberare meant to study the change in the effects of such factors which cannot be measured directly. According to Bowley, “Index numbers are used to measure the changes in some quantity which we cannot observe directly”. For example, changes in business activity in a country are not capable of direct measurements but it is possible to study the relative changes in business activity by studying the variation in the values of some such factors which affect business activity and which are capable of direc measurement.
Index number are commonly used statistical devices for measuring the combined fluctuation in a group related variables. The CPI is meant to be a measure of the cost of living in the United States at any given time. It is used to track inflation. The CPI is derived from the cost of a given “market basket” of products and services that people typically need to buy. In other words, a set of goods and services is made up and the prices of those goods and services are determined. This is used as a baseline. As the prices of those goods and services changes, so does the CPI.…

The consumer price index (CPI) is considered the most important measure of inflation. It also compares a fixed list of goods and services to a base period. The CPI is a major economic indicator for Wal-Mart because it measures inflation. Whether the economy is experiencing inflation or not is crucial for Wal-Mart as it relates to pricing and availability of products. Also, being able to compare good and services to a base period is a great way for Wal-Mart to see how their products performed in a certain period.…

After viewing the different Gross Domestic purchases over the past 10 years, I have found that GDP deflator can be viewed as a measure of general inflation in the domestic economy. Inflation can be labeled as a measure of price changes over time. The deflator is usually expressed in terms of an index, a time series of index numbers. For example, percentage changes on the previous years are also shown below.…

There are very many different economic indicators that are used to analyze economic activity of a company, industry, country, or region. There are three different general trends (directions for prices or rates) in the economy. "Those with predictive value are leading indicators; those occurring at the same time as the related economic activity are coincident indicators; and those that only become apparent after the activity are lagging indicators. Examples are unemployment, housing starts, Consumer Price Index, industrial production, bankruptcies, GDP, stock market prices, money supply changes, and housing starts also called business indicators." • CPI is Consumer Price Index, which measures changes through time in the price level of consumer goods and services purchased by households. This variable was chosen because it is a determinant for the level of prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services, which turns signifies how out of reach basic goods and services might be for those without resources of income. We will look at the corresponding annual consumer price index over a period of time, from 1970 to 2001.…
