Drugs are present in every community, regardless of size or socioeconomic status. Our Democratic and Republican presidential candidates both recognize the drug epidemic here today, though they have proposed different platforms to approach this issue. The Republican candidate, Donald Trump, recognizes the drug epidemic as a security-related problem. When discussing how to approach the standing issue of opioid use, Trump refers to the U.S. borders and explains he will build a wall on the U.S./Mexican border to reduce and eliminate the intake of drugs (Trump, 2016). He exclaims that he will “work with addicts to try and make them better” (Trump, 2016), though he has not yet proposed a specific plan as to how he will help the individuals in need. The Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, has proposed a more developed plan as to how she will help the epidemic. Clinton (2016) expresses her view of the addiction and substance abuse as a disease, rather than a “moral failing” (Clinton, 2016) of the individuals. The Second Amendment states that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Cornell). Trump agrees fully with this constitutional amendment, stating that concealing a weapon “is a right, not a privilege” (Trump, 2016) and that the right is weakening. He believes that every state should sanction concealed-carry permits to allow all eligible citizens the ability to carry a weapon. This would allow all who interact with our children to possibly be in possession of a fire arm. Not only could our children potentially face someone on the street with a weapon, but there could also be a large presence of guns in schools.
