Football Brain Trauma
Recent studies show that football players are likely to have brain trauma and will be affected in the long run. Because of the abnormal buildup of protein in the brain, it causes the tissue to be degenerated. Although brain trauma can become a problem for anyone at any time, football is a push for the problem. One of the common effects on the brain is chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is the loss of memory, emotional and aggression control. After all, football should be banned from high school sports because chronic traumatic encephalopathy is not worth anyone's life, stress is brought upon families because of their concern, and the health risk makes it worth the process. For starters, football players result with chronic traumatic …show more content…
Anywhere from just a broken bone, or in the long run they worry for the CTE disease.“I'm horrified every time an athlete runs out on a field on a Friday night," Zac's mother, Brenda Easter, told the Register after learning of McKee's latest findings. "We don't know who the next Zac is going to be." (Board, Editorial). This statement was made after a football player’s mom had to deal with the loss of her son after his football career when he had CTE. This disease caused Zac to commit suicide because he didn’t have emotional control and he was struggling. This has happened multiple times, therefore football is not a safe sport because of the effects it leaves on …show more content…
One of the health issues can be from CTE, which results in depression, dementia, and memory loss. CTE is something no one should have to live with and if it’s preventable by banning football, that’s what should happen. This disease also causes stress upon family members as well because they worry every time their loved one goes out on the field that they’re going to get injured. After contacting Bobak Abdolmohammadi, research assistant at the Boston University CTE Center, of the brain samples donated to the center, around eighty percent are of former football players. His opinion echoes, based upon the findings at BU, that it is the cumulative exposure to repetitive head impacts that is most likely the main explanation behind CTE. He believes it is clear that something must be done to help solve this issue at the basic foundational level. In conclusion, the injury rate in the sport of football in relation to a child/adolescent’s vulnerability to physical injury creates a very precarious situation for a child participating in tackle football. Despite innumerable measures from the NFL to increase safety guidelines for the game, concussions remain the most prevalent and, often times, the most fatal injury of NFL players. Take, for instance, Mike “Iron Mike” Webster, who plays center for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs, who died of a heart attack at the age of fifty. After numerous post-mortem autopsies, doctors concluded that Webster had suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a neurodegenerative disease. His doctors estimated the damage to his brain was equivalent to 25,000 automobile crashes. According to neuropsychologist at Boston University Robert Stern, “In football, one has to expect that almost every play of every game and every practice, they’re going to be hitting their heads against each other. That’s the nature of the game.” Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is the most common disease found in NFL players. In fact, a study by the Boston University School of Medicine shows that, out of every thirty-four deceased NFL players, thirty-three were victims of CTE. However, this…

September 28, 2002. No this isn’t the day that Title IX came into play, or the day that Roger Bannister ran a four-minute mile, or the day that LeBron James decided he would leave the Cleveland Cavaliers to play for the Miami Heat. This is the day that we would see an NFL legend, Mike Webster, laying on an autopsy table at the Allegheny County coroner’s office in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The significance of this day? After this day, the world of football would be turned upside down. Webster died of heart failure, but there was more to it than what met the eye. Webster was the first confirmed case of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is defined by the Brain Injury Research Institute as, “a degenerative brain disease most commonly found in those who have suffered multiple concussions or mild traumatic brain injuries (Omalu What is CTE?).” In this essay, I will explore CTE and what the NFL has-or rather has not-done to help its players in order to determine if football does cause CTE. Under the microscope, you can see CTE as a “buildup of tau, a…

The movie concussion was the first time of the correlation between concussions and football. As I read Nationwide Children’s article, “Concussion in sports”, allowed me to increase my knowledge. Throughout the article, the author categorized what is a concussion and how it affects players. During reading, I found that concussions are a serious issue in sports, because it can cause severe brain damage to an athlete. This is concerning because the brains is one of the most important parts of a person’s body and if effected it could change a person life forever. Furthermore, I found it upsetting that the NFL does not make the risk of playing football known. Although, I understand the NFL provides minorities with opportunities to become successful.…

The prevalent issue in long-term injury in professional sports today is concussions, and the overwhelming scientific evidence that repeated blows to the head lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). In the past, this was known as dementia pugilistica, and the resulting symptoms are CTE are disturbingly similar to early onset dementia. Individuals who believe the responsibility of dealing with potential long-term injuries falls only on the athlete make the false assumption that the risks are known. The specifics of the long range impact of these repeated blows to head are only gradually being learned, and one can not simply assume that players…

I know in my hometown Greensboro, NC at my school James B. Dudley High School football is like the heart to the school. So hearing that the risk outweigh the benefits to young people playing certain sports would make an out roar in the community. Knowing football players myself I know athletes feel that playing football grows their character, meaning if they get hurt it makes them stronger as a person. Also with athletes they have self-discipline and a higher self-esteem as athletes have a roles in their sports, as everyone has their own job in the sport. But also there is cons of being an athlete such as head trauma. I believe that if I had a child, I would let them play football. Football is America's favorite sport and I know the feeling of excitement on Sunday, Monday and Thursday night screaming at the TV for my team to win. Football teaches young children to never give up and to always get back up when they fall down. Additionally, football helps kids stay in shape. More than one third of America is overweight and being physically active at a young age correlates to being active as an adult. Football allows kids to work physically, mentally, and socially stronger by working in a team which helps them work better once they're older to get a job. It’s a great way to illustrate to kids how teamwork actually works and how everyone’s role affects everyone…
