Millard High School, like most high schools, has an extremely strong rivalry with its neighboring school, the Delta Rabbits. Maybe it is because of close proximity or maybe it is a fight for which team is the best in the county, but since the two schools started playing each other in 1926, tensions have always ran high in every aspect of competition. At any sporting event between the two schools, one can expect to see a gym, stadium, or field packed with the opposing colors of red vs blue. It is not just the players that make it such a strong competition. Fillmore is a town where you get those teachers who taught your mom, your dad, your grandpa, and all of your siblings. It is a generational fight for superiority that has been engrained in the kids. It is not uncommon to see grandparents, in yelling matches after games.…
On October 22nd, 2015 Elizabeth Slattery, a junior midfielder for the University of Florida Gators soccer team, scored a last-second winner in double overtime against South Carolina. The buzzer beater shot came off of Slattery’s foot with two seconds on the clock before a tie would’ve been made. This win was crucial for the Gators to clinch the SEC regular season title and an overall exciting and energizing win that would help push the team to win the SEC Tournament as well. This play got overnight media attention and even gained SportsCenter #1 play of the night. The following social media posts will be about this last-second goal and the dog pile that immediately formed after the ball hit the back…
Over the weekend I had a huge Soccer Tournament in Grey. We had two games on Saturday and one game Sunday. In the first game we played a Cumberland club team and beat them 2-0. In our second game we played Westbrook and won 5-0. So at the end of the day we were 2-0 and in first for our bracket, but winslow was also 2-0. Going into Sunday we had to beat South Portland by two goals and not let them score. We ended up tying them 3-3 and we got eliminated because Winslow beat Westbrook 4-0.…
Before Marvin’s game his dad, Mr. Whalen, asked Marvin if he wanted a ride down to the school and Marvin then replied with “No. Thanks, Dad, but no. It’ll do me good to run down there.” (435) This act shows how Marvin is not lazy and knows how to prepare for the game. In addition to warming up he rests, he also knows what to eat and how much. Mrs. Whalen was nervous that her husband, Mr. Whalen, would end up getting caught in the excitement of the game. He promised her that he wouldn’t. When they got to the game, Mr. Whalen eyed the big center before the game started. During the game the big center would not stop fouling Marvin and, “again the big center fouled Marvin.” (439) This act could cause Marvin to get seriously injured, but instead he ignores it and takes his shots. The big center’s dad was speaking harshly about Marvin and saying Marvin should get called instead of his son, Guido. Ironically Mr. Whalen, “who talked long and seriously to Marvin about sportsmanship,” (433) ends up getting into a brawl at one of Marvin’s basketball game over this. Right before this had happened Mr. Whalen’s wife told him that he should go take a smoke because he was getting too excited, and she was trying to help him relax. Unfortunately Guido’s dad caught him at the wrong time. At the end of the fight the principle talked…
Everyone got in a line, and coach told us who was going to do the PKs. She called on Damien, Dominic, Evan, Bash, and me. Damien went up to the line while the other team's goalie got ready to block it. Damien kicked the ball right at the corner of the goal and the ball went in. We all cheered loudly and then waited tensely as Damien then got ready to be goalie. The other team's kicker went up to the line and kicked it right at Damien so he blocked it easily. Next, I was up to kick. I kicked it to the bottom left corner of the goal and…
It was a dreadful cold fall morning on November 7th and I was getting ready to board the bus for a state football game against the Becker Bulldogs. The police escorted us to Saint Cloud State under a lot of care. Even though I was a freshman and didn’t play much varsity, I was getting…
Mrs. Davis got the police officers providing security at the game to remove the offending students from the student section. I made it fairly easy for them since I gave Mrs. Davis names and faces to look for. She and the officers escorted several students out of the student section and kicked them out of the game with consequences to be addressed…

February 12, 2010, it was time to put that Leesburg orange and black jersey on. We stepped off the bus at the Vanguard stadium in Ocala; I could hear the screaming fans cheering on the teams that were already playing before us. I walked along the concrete path toward the stadium entrance with my soccer…
The whole team was mad but there was no one to be at but ourselves. We stop playing our ball and it cause us to lose the game. That day was an eye opener for me. I learn that day to never get rap up in the glory because anything can taking away in seconds. I learn to always work hard at something you want. If you want something you must go out and handle your business. Once you get to top never stop working keep working and striving to be better. Even if you're the best still push and…
Undefeated in the regular season and on a role going into this Friday night game, we were the team to be beat. Our seventh grade team, quarterbacked by Alex Watermeier, had been together for three years and had built up an unbreakable chemistry. Although we had never made it this far in the yearly tournament, we were pumped up and ready…
It was 8:00 AM on a cloudy Saturday morning, and my team and I were playing against Monona Grove SC Cobras. It was our first game of the tournament and our opponents had scored their first goal against us. My team and I were eager and desperate for a goal. Within minutes, my team scores a goal and the score was tied,…
I gave the coach warning to hurry up with the sub. The girl's basketball coach was at the scorer when she heard me say that. The very next sub was from West Creek, they didn't take as long as Northeast has with their subs. The girl's basketball coach starting screaming "why don't you throw the ball in for them, and they are taking long!" As I'm administering the free throws, I can hear her yellowing from the table. I stop the game, ask her to remove herself from the table. She wasn't a book keeper, score keeper, or timer. I went to the boy's head coach and told him to control your coaching staff. I told him she is the head coach for the girl's team and I will access a technical foul to you if her behavior continues. I The boys coach from Northeast didn't understand why he would get a technical. I explained it to him, and just said whatever. The girls basketball coach from Northeast was very angry at this time and told the scorer and time keeper I want their names so I can report them. During half time, the score and the time keeper told us the girls coach from Northeast Middle School wants your name. I told them to give it to her, we didn't do anything wrong. While in the hallway talking to the…
So what exactly happened? According to the authors, what was supposed to be an innocent “tradition of the powder puff football game” arranged by the senior girls for the junior girls, turned to an out of control game of humiliation and revenge. Girls were being pushed and kicked, splattered with paint and human feces. Later in the text we find out that, pig parts which were supplied by one of the parents were thrown at the poor girls. Someone put bucket over one girl’s head and hid it with a baseball bat. Parents of one girl, who lost consciousness during that “game,” testified later that “the victims were threatened with more violence if they left the field.” After the beatings and humiliations ended, five girls were sent to the hospital, one with a broken ankle, and another with a concussion so serious it caused memory loss, another to receive 10 stitches in her scalp. Every rule and principle of that game was violated, and per Mike Green, Northbrook Police deputy chief “many of the students could face criminal charges.” Not everyone; however, was part of the vicious game. The tape of that horrible incident, that was released and examined by the school officials, and later used by lawyers including Rollin Suskin, who represented several of the victims, also…
