The lengths of games differ though, with football being played for four fifteen minute quarters with a possibility for a fifteen minute overtime period that may result in a tie, and baseball being played over nine innings, with no limit of extra innings, no limit on time, and no possibility for a tie. The time of year is different as well, as MLB seasons last from early April to early November, compared to NFL seasons which last from mid-September to early February. The difference in playing seasons is partially due to the amount of games played. Football teams in the NFL play sixteen games over seventeen weeks. After the regular season, there is a five week postseason in which fifteen games are played. MLB teams play 162 games in a season, with a five day break in July. An MLB postseason could include up to forty three games, but, like in football, it lasts for five weeks. A reason for this smaller schedule is that football is played much more violently than baseball. Player injuries are still common in both sports though.
