The medieval knight began training at the age of eight, which was when he was sent to a nearby castle to become a page. Although the household would saddle him with considerable domestic duties, the boy was expected to master wrestling, horsemanship, and fighting with both spear and sword. A page-in-training practiced ceaselessly by attacking a dummy with a shield, which was hung on a wooden pole. when the page hit the shield with his weapon, the device could easily spin around and maim him unless he moved away quickly. Pages' also learned to read, write, sing, dancing, and behave properly in the king's court. At the age of fifteen or sixteen, the page advanced to the rank of squire. Then, it was his job to enquire about a specific knight's…

Imagine living in a society where your social and economic rank determined the type of clothing you could wear. Quite frankly, I would not have survived in a society that dictated what I can or cannot wear. I would feel suppressed, as if someone was taking away my freedom. I strongly believe that what we wear defines us more than we think. In other words, fashion is an expression of who we are as an individual. However, this was not the case during the medieval period. The clothing in medieval Europe was dictated by the Pyramid of Power or a feudal system. Fashion during the medieval period was not just only about clothing, rather it dealt with economic…

The origin of foot binding began when Emperor Li Yu created a six-foot tall golden lotus that was decorated with both pearls and stones. He asked his concubine Yao Niang to bind her feet in white silk into a crescent moon shape and performed a dance ballet-like on the points of her feet on the lotus. Her dance was very graceful so others decided to imitate her. The practice then replicated by upper-class women and spread throughout China. Thus becoming popular in during the Song Dynasty. Children ages four or five years old were made to bind their feet and deal with the intense pain. By the end of the Song dynasty, men would make a “toast to the golden lotus” by drinking a special made shoe containing a small cup in the heel. Some would even drink from the shoe itself during the Yuan dynasty and lasted until the late Qing dynasty. By the 19th century, approximately 40-50% of women had bound feet and 100% of women from…

Finally, as many people look at the Middle Ages as a time in which many great and barbaric things took place, not only of people really noticed any other things. One thing that many people tend to skip by would be the different types of clothing that the era showed off. And that very type of clothing would be the Farthingale. A farthingale was a bell-shaped hoopskirt worn under the skirts of well-to-do women, in which first originated in Spain. It was only worn by the wealthy class, as the commoners would wear only gowns. And because of that, it proves itself to be quite recognizable toward most of queens back then as they were the ones who worn it. However, it wasn’t just a sense of fashion at the time; it served itself as an important part…
The Roaring Twenties: a time when women broke out of their shells of modesty and were not afraid to bare a little skin or wear a bit of makeup; when women finally gained some control; when jazz music, drinking and partying were what society lived for; when flappers danced the night away. The 1920s was an era of great change in society’s attitude toward many different aspects of life. For instance, what was considered acceptable behavior for women and the way men treated their wives drastically changed. During World War I, women had to take up many responsibilities of the men fighting in war such as earning money for the family, leaving women no choice other than to get a job alongside of single-handedly raising their families. With men being gone and nobody to control their lives, women took advantage of their new-found freedom. Women now became a part of the night scene, partying and drinking more as well as dressing and acting more promiscuously. When the men came back from war, they had the same mindset about women as they did when they left, but were taken by surprise when they saw the drastic changes. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is a novel set in the 1920s that exposes the dark layers of the twenties’ glamour. Throughout The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald depicts the known and hidden lives and roles of women in the 1920s.…
“Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them”, declared top designer Marc Jacobs. Although others may have differing opinions; there is definite significance to clothing in history. Clothing started Europe has consistently been a center for innovations in culture and fashion. With every major event that occurred, there was a similar change in the previous garments. Therefore, the society and attitudes of each time period are reflected in the fashions and style of European citizens.…
Every time I play the organ, I wear my organ shoes. Because of their thin soles, I can feel my way around the pedalboard. Being able to feel the pedals makes me much more accurate with the notes I play. The soles are made of suede allowing the ability to glide across the pedals. In addition to the suede’s ability to glide, it also gives enough traction to stop on the correct pedal and not slide past it. My shoes are silent, they do not make a noise when moving and playing on the pedalboard. The upper parts of my organ shoes are made of soft, breathable leather. The leather is pliable and has conformed to the shape of my feet with continual use. Right up against the bottom of my feet near my toes, the shoes have supports that aid in using the…
Wearing footwear could alter someone's center of pressure. If that person naturally had a mid-foot center of pressure, but wore shoes in which the heal was higher than the foot would be naturally, their center of pressure could be shifted so that their weight was more concentrated closer to their toes. This, in turn, would alter the rest of their body - there might be more of a curve in their lumbar spine, for…
