For Nonconformity The World Whips You With Its Displeasure Summary
Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote, “ For nonconformity, the world whips you with its displeasure,” is incredibly significant in society both back when he wrote it and even today. People talk about diversity and how its okay, even encouraged to be different, but no one actually means the words they say. Back in the 1700s and even today, nonconformity has never been accepted. If someone doesn’t behave, look, or speak like everyone around them, they are seen as a tyrant or troublemaker, not a respectable activist. This quote teaches us to forget what society thinks and speak out anyway. Emerson always encouraged people to rely on themselves and their own thoughts, not the thoughts of others. No matter what you do in life, society is going to judge

The society and government in which a person lives is one of the most influential factors for their religion, values and what is socially acceptable within the terms of society. In Ayn Rand’s Anthem, the dystopian society’s government has a very prominent role in every citizen’s life. The council, the group of people who run the society, established many rules and ways of thinking towards appearance and lifestyle. In this society, being different is considered evil because the council engraved into the citizen’s heads that it is only socially acceptable to be one of the group. Prometheus, the main character, is individualized in the civilization as one of the smartest, tallest and most capable people. These characteristics resulted in rejection and outcast treatment from the council. Society perceives cleverness and height as a curse, consequentially living a life of sins and transgressions. To prevent citizens from stepping out of obedience and overthrowing their power, the leaders of this dystopian society maintain a negative connotation toward individuality.…

Reinforcing identity values, diversity, and notions of intersectionality, are all core issues facing contemporary society. In this current national political climate, the need for accepting diversity and valuing differences is at the top of the societal list. With movement after movement sprouting, people are looking for socially powerful leaders to lead them in the direction of societal and political reform. When minorities examine media sources and view the faces that represent their country, the rarity of individuals who share the same qualities is frightening. It is not simply about the diversity of the physicality, but about the diversity of those who are willing to enact a positive social change. It is to have…

The power and knowledge of individualism is lost in the novel Anthem and Ayn Rand does a good job showing us the downfalls and troubles the future might hold. The society that Equality 7-2521 lives in is harsh and believes only in collectivism instead of individualism. The main collective government figures are known as Council of Scholars and Council of Vocations who make the rules and strictly force each brother in the society to follow each rule. They are forced to be alike in every way and live for each other instead of themselves. “We strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike” (Rand 19). This is something that is not taken lightly and anyone that goes against this will have to go to the Palace of Corrective Detention…

Imagine a life where your thoughts and beliefs no longer show any sense of desire or feelings, as to where all forms of originality have been lost. All live under the idea of “one in all, all in one”(Rand, 19). Minds of the citizens of the Anthem society are formed to think, feel, speak as one; all equal and no individuality, all are one. One to think as an individual shall be shunned for the greater good. Rebellion of individuality, a form of evil of which none shall bare the pain, except for one.…

Steve Jobs once said, “Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life...have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” By this, he means: don't let the voices and beliefs of others overrule yours, but instead follow your own intuition. This is exactly what Atticus teaches his children in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In the novel, Atticus shows his children that even though everyone may be against your belief or stand on something, continue to think for yourself even though others may disagree.…

Frank’s essay “Commodity Your Dissent,” is based on the cultural ideas in the 1950s. He explained the countercultural idea was against the notion that all Americans should live the same and to be the same. To live one basic life and be identical to one another but there was a change were people started to rebelled. Rules were being broken, individuals were becoming different and these changes were changing the entire world. For example, marketing was changing so people could be able to consume the products that were being made for their individuals’ selves. As they seen the changes, marketing was not promoting conformity but they were promoting “never-ending self-fulfillment” and “constantly updated individualism” (para. 6). Meaning that they…

Although Americans are encouraged to be an individual, we still are too often criticized for being who we are and speaking our minds. Our desire to be accepted by society can lead us straight into collectivism. If everyone wants to be treated equally among their peers, we will move towards the idea of complete equality among all: collectivism. Anthem’s collectivist society prohibits individualism and it is frowned upon to differ from others. Prometheus is an outcast in the society and “[was] born with a curse” (18) because he looked different from the others and was intellectually curious unlike the rest of…

Throughout history and today, it is known that most people want fit in and not be different and if someone isn’t like everyone else it is a bad thing. For those who do strive to be different kind find it difficult not to be put down or made fun of just because they are trying to be individuals. This is clearly an issue in our society and the society in the book Anthem by Ayn Rand. The theme of Ayn Rand’s Anthem is individuality can outweigh society’s expectations. In Anthem the dystopian society says it is a sin to be different and you will essentially be punished or at least disrespected if you are different than the rest of this city. In the first couple pages the theme already starts to show:…

Kwame Appiah talks about, we must wrestle with the idea of diversity and its value. We cannot expect people to be the same, we cannot enforce it upon people either, and it’s completely unethical to do so. Why do we value diversity so much? Do we secretly fear the overly globalized world of the future and the identity crises we will face there? What will our lives be like and will corporations annihilate our individuality once and for all? I don’t think that’s the case. Humans are innovators, creators, and regurgitators but we never spit it back at you the way you gave it to us. That is the secret behind change, especially cultural change. Culture, which is by definition, the shared beliefs system of a people applied to all aspects of shared and personal life within that people, depends on the participation of the individual. One person in any given culture is always the unit of measurement in that culture by which you are able to understand and measure the culture. One person can change and so the culture at large has begun to change or diversify or evolve. What makes us change, what drives…

This quote interests me due to the fact that I had a lot of different opinions on roles of men and women than many of my peers at college as well. I grew up watching a man go to work, and contribute to the washing of the dishes and cooking. My Mother also worked and did some cooking and cleaning. In my household growing up everybody had equal responsibility in the household. The author’s message is that you shouldn’t judge anyone based on your enclosed beliefs on how society operates. The title of the passage is perfect due to the fact that it is exactly that that you can live your life by, or you can live your life without the thoughts carried in your head, and be open to every different experience with an open mind. That is like a man assuming that a woman should just be behind a stove because she is a…

To many in America, I am diversity. I represent a minority group, I am the exotic elephant in the room, and I am who companies include to up their diversity intake. My culture is the outline for my entire life; while it doesn't define me, it has changed and impacted my life is different ways. Diversity is the basis of all communities, and tolerance is a result of educating oneself on this topic. A group may be diverse in nature, but if not tolerant, they are not succeeding in being diverse in action. My life as an Indian-American student in a upper-middle class neighborhood may not seem to give much insight on diversity, but my experience has not been stereotypical. From an early age, my parents surrounded our family with Indians. It was not…
