The power of lighting has been used for many years by various artist. The girl’s eyes are illuminated in the painting which draws attention to them. Also, the nontraditional lighting may catch people off guard and make the painting stand out from the crowd. The rest of the painting is dark. This adds to the mysteriousness and eeriness of the painting. It also contrasts amazingly with the girl which again draws more attention to her. The only sources of light are held in the girl’s hands which, once again, draws more attention to her. The use of lighting draws attention to the girl as she hold the source of light and is the only thing illuminated by it. The whole left side has the image of three black people. The dream life of the black is depicted on the right side of the painting, and they bring a positive and happy feeling and mood. The right side is divided into three layers, starting with the idea of justice with the image of three hands holding three different objects such as a hammer, weighing scale, and a book, and they represent justice for black people as it is in a court. The next layer is a grassy and ripened field with some butterflies flying on it, and last one is a sun rising from the mountains. These layers depict the three stages of success in black life. First, they need to attain justice in order to get into a good position in life or to reach the field of opportunities where they can show their strengths and become successful, which later bring them to the light, the sun, and take out the darkness out of their life. The center of the painting, as mentioned, is a White figure, which represents White…

Today, poverty is prevalent throughout the world with 80% of humanity living on less than $10 a day. However, this isn’t the first time poverty is seen so frequently in society. During the Renaissance, approximately 50% of Europe’s population lived at a subsistence level with 80% of Europeans facing possible starvation in times of peril. In the midst of this time period, as poverty ran rampant it led to differing attitudes towards helping the poor as well as the concept of poverty. Poverty was viewed by the upper class as well as humanists as a negative influence to society due to characteristics like idleness which was thought to be the beginning of all evils. Meanwhile, religious officials like the clergy as well as artists thought that the poor should be assisted for spiritual benefits and believed that aiding the poor was only…

The woman in the Yellow Wallpaper seems to be trapped in a reality where all she can think about is the repugnant wallpaper in her patients` room and how much she despises it. The woman thinks that the ``paint and paper look as if boys` school had used it`` (333) and this is what the wallpaper would have been described as the whole time she was in the same room with. In the beginning, the protagonist sees the pattern as a woman trapped in the wallpaper and trying to escape, “The faint figure behind seemed to shake the pattern, just as if she wanted to get out,” (652). This metaphor symbolizes the protagonist’s mind beginning to realize that the room may not be the best environment for her. During the middle of the story, the protagonist claims that she sees the woman in the wallpaper creeping, “I see her in those dark grape ' arbors, creeping all around the garden,” (654). This description increases the feeling of unease and concern. As the story continues, the protagonist realizes that she is the woman in the wallpaper, “I kept on creeping just the same” (656). By the end of the story, the protagonist finds herself trapped inside the pattern of the wallpaper, symbolizing her captivity in the room. This yellow wallpaper metaphor occurs several times throughout the story and helps the reader follow the protagonist’s experience of developing…

Time continues on, however, some thing’s never change. One of the things that seem to never change is poverty. Whether it is in the lifestyle in America and/ or Africa or in the school system. “Fremont High School” a report written by Jonathan Kozol, contains certain elements that are similar of those in “Changing the Face of Poverty”, a literacy narrative by Diana George, such as; the use of first person, strong diction, and the use of stereotypes.…

The eyes of the man give meaning to the title of the artwork. Without his facial expression I would just assume this painting would be titled ‘circles - man with a headache’. His eyes having a blank stare show his confusion without words. The way his hands rest on his face show where the focus should be in the painting. The watch in the painting shows the element of time but because you cannot see the time on the watch it leaves you with the impression that maybe time is still. The circles in the painting provide for thought that the man’s mind is cluttered with thoughts as is the paper cluttered with circles. The brighter yellows and oranges are more centralized in the painting, whereas the darker greens and blues are more around the edges. The circles surround the man in the middle, except for on his chest and arms where the circles are not as close together but are still present.…

This image is very eye-catching to the viewer because of the look in the boy’s eyes and the hand around his neck. The reader automatically looks closer to see what the hand says and examine the meaning of this picture. The hand is one of the most important aspects of this picture; the hand is transparent and has black and white words written on it. The black letters are abusive words and the white letters say, “Verbal abuse is still abuse.” The hand is also grasping the boy’s neck, which interprets to the…

According to Anthony Richmond in his database, Refugees, Inequality and Human Development he states, " The inequalities, which undoubtedly exist within wealthy countries, pale in significance when compared with the in-equalities between them and the rest of the world." I believe Anthony is trying to convince his audience that these people need help and they need the help from the wealthier countries because they aren't getting the help from their own country. These people who are suffering do not have the quality for life that is given to us. When viewing the data given to us from Anthony's database shows us that "there is a close connection between the incidence of violent conflict and low levels of income, and/or low scores on the Human…

This brief journal is written by Suki Kim, titled "Facing Poverty with a Rich Girl's Habits", basically what I gathered here from reading is that this once rich young Asian female went through a process that she probably never could of imagined could happen. Unfortunetely it did and it was real enough to the point that her and her parents had to flee the Country simply because of the laws which would be punishable there for bankruptcy which would of resulted in jail time, so they decided to flee to America. I see this as a wake-up call for some people because some think that because they are rich that poverty could never happen to them and it can and will if you are not responsible in your decision making as her father saw which in turned changed thier lives forever for now.…

As I was reading “The Uses of Poverty: The Poor Pay All," I was enlightened to read about the social phenomenon of poverty that I had never come across. For example, how the poor “buy goods others do not want and thus prolong the economic usefulness," is an ingenious way to put the unique situation that is addressed in this essay. Although Gans is using satire to poke playfully at the rich for looking down upon the poor, I conceived from it that both sides need to open their eyes. When people view this essay, they understand it as something that’s meant to hurt the poor, but if you closely read between the lines, it is pointing fingers on both sides, and in the end has a solution for everyone.…
