Lab 1

1.Which of the three types of fingerprints was the fingerprint that you examined (loop, arch, or whorl)? Within that print, what minutiae did you see?
- Whorl, and a core and a delta.

2. Compare the print of your helper with your own. Describe the similarities and differences between the two fingerprints.
- Loop, and we both have a core, but she has an island.

3. Imagine that you are Alphonse Bertillon and you are trying to explain why you think fingerprints can be so useful to help solve crimes. What would you say to persuade them? Pretend you are explaining to someone who has never noticed fingerprints or thought about what they are.
- A fingerprint may be small and unnoticeable to the eye, and even look like many other peoples, but they are in fact very different. Every fingerprint has a different pattern that is unique and unlike anyone else’s. I compared two fingerprints and found that they may look alike from afar, but up close one goes one way, while the other does something else and completely different.

Lab 2

1. Name and describe the four main components of blood.
- Red blood cells: contain hemoglobin, a protein that binds oxygen,
White blood cells: fight infection
Platelets: help the blood to clot, if you get a wound for example
Plasma: contains salts and various kinds of proteins.

2. What antigens and antibodies determine blood type? What are the antigens made of?
- B antigen, Rh antibody, A anti body, A antigen

3. How is blood type determined? What happens if someone is given the wrong type of blood in a blood transfusion?
- By what type of antigens and antibodies are in their blood. And they can die.

4. Explain how you did in the game?
- I did not do very well. I wasn’t sure what I was doing so I kind of just went with it.

Lab 3

1. What common misconception does the law enforcement course on creating blood spatters dispel?
- That blood splatters always mean the same thing.

2. What is the maximum speed that blood can travel? What can be learned from the shape of the drop?
- 25.1 feet. What happened and how a weapon was used.

    When I was dusting my apartment for prints I found about 5 different prints and 2 partial prints. I found one partial print on the glass on my coffee table in the living room and one partial print on the night stand in my room. I found 2 prints on the glass on the sliding door to my patio and 1 print on the mirror in the master bathroom, 1 print on the back of a CD found on the end table in the living room and 1 print on the dining room table in the. I went to JoAnn Fabrics to get a Slinky Science fingerprint science kit so I could use the powder and the feather from the box. The powder came in a bottle so it made it really hard to get prints and I actually had my boyfriend put prints on the things I listed so I could use the powder and the powder was also white and made it hard to see. When I used the feather it would smudge the print and I would have to try and use it a different direction. If I were to side to side with the feather it would smudge the print but if I would go up and down it would push the powder away so I was able to see the print better but not clearly. I did not find any prints in my apartment due to my boyfriend cleaning everything. This is why I only find the prints I did because I asked him to put the prints there. Yes I could tell the difference between the prints if I were to put my print right next to it. My finger print has loops and my boyfriend’s prints have tent arches on them. Some of the surfaces that I would think I would find prints on are door knobs, TV, the handle on a microwave, the keys to the car, the thermostat and light switches, books, cell phones and you could also get prints off of duct tape and the door handles of a car that has metal handles and you can get prints off of garbage bags also and DVD cases.     Fingerprints are impressions created by ridges of the skin. The ridges are in the tips of the fingers, palms of the hands, and the sole of the feet. These ridges form before a baby is born. They do not change, but they can become larger. There are three different types of ridges in our population, loops, whorls, and arches. Crime investigators can save fingerprints by brushing powered in place with either camelhair or a fiberglass brush. Prints can be seen in many different ways. One way is iodine; it produces a purple vapor that interacts with a component of the fingerprint to reveal a print. Also, ninydrin, which reacts with amino acids in the print to form a blue purple color. Silver nitrate is another example; the chloride ion of salt will react with silver nitrate to produce silver chloride. Silver chloride is colorless, but can be seen with an ultra violent as a black or reddish color. The last one is super glue; it can be heated in an enclosed area that contains the evidence in question. It appears in an off-white shade. The first year of finger print identification began in the United States in 1902. They first started using fingerprints for the identification of criminals. Fingerprints now go through a process called the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System. Fingerprints are sent through electronic mail, processed on IAFIS, and response is returned to the contributing agency after two hours or less for electronic criminal fingerprint submissions and twenty-four hours or less for electronic civil fingerprint submissions. This system helps in many ways, it helps identify the criminal, and also it helps keep a record of this person electronically. The FBI, CSI, and many more use this.
