Foreshadowing In A Good Man Is Hard To Find
Candidly, after reading “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor for the first time, I was completely shocked by the violence and the story’s tragic ending. While, I grasped elements of the foreshadowing she used throughout the story, such as mentioning the dangerous Misfit was “aloose” in the first paragraph, Red Sammy’s reference to two men failing to pay for gas, and the odd name and spelling of the town of “Toombsboro” the family was outside of when the Grandmother awakened and mentioned the plantation (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012). Nevertheless, I failed to fully anticipate the impending doom and the brutality O’Connor had planned for the family. As a result, the stunning ending was as disorienting as a bright, burst of light flashing in my eyes and I was unable to identify any of the nuanced literary elements interwoven within the short story (Fassler, 2013). However, after recovering the initial shock and rereading the story, I was able to appreciate how the style and tone of the third person narrator’s vivid descriptions of the characters’ clothing and word choice added contrast, context, and elements of irony to the story. …show more content…
As a Christian writer, O’Connor would be well aware that the Gospel of Christ, is commonly referred to as the good news (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012 & Bible.Org, 2004). However, as flawed and imperfect humans, no one is capable of embracing the good news of Christ and living every moment of their life in alignment the Gospel. Subsequently, a “good” man or woman in the story is anyone who temporally demonstrates a Christ like virtue by extending grace to another person (Fassler,

O’Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia and raised as devout Roman Catholic. After finishing O’Connor’s story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” I found that the ending was very shocking but not troubling just because it was unexpected. I believe that this ending is troubling whether it was unexpected or expected. There were many foreshadows leading up to the tragic ending. For example, when O’ Connor writes “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady.” (203) she foreshadows the car accident that later happens down the dirt road of Georgia. Another foreshadow in the very beginning of the story is when the grandmother see’s in the newspaper that the misfit has escaped in Florida and that they should not head that way, but everyone ignores her and they go anyway. On the way to Florida the family “... passed a large cotton field with five or six graves fenced in the middle of it, like a small island.”(203) foreshadowing the death of the family. Some other foreshadowing in the story is when they end up at Red Sammy’s Barbeque where they again here about the misfit through Sammy, the owner. Grandmother and Sammy bond over the hatred towards violent citizens such as the misfit. We may also see the color “red” as a foreshadow of death because blood is red.…

In A Good Man is Hard to Find, Flannery O’Connor uses foreshadowing and symbolism to portray the threat and eventual presence of death in her story. In the beginning of the story O’Connor foreshadows the appearance of The Misfit who has a big part to play in the later part of the essay (O’Connor 3). On page four, an accident is foreshadowed then the author states if someone finds “her (the grandmother) dead on the highway… they would know she was a lady”(O’Connor 4). One of the most glaring connection to death was in the part of the drive when the family sees “five or six graves” which symbolize the death of the 6 members of the family (O’Connor 5). The Misfit is mentioned again when the family stops at a barbecue place called The Tower (O’Connor…

In “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” Flannery O'Connor frequently utilizes foreshadowing to raise suspense and intrigue readers in anticipation of her characters’ eventual demise. The story barely begins before we encounter the first example. The story’s protagonist, the grandmother, announces news of an escaped criminal to her son. The felon was headed to Florida where, readers quickly learn, the family was also going. She exclaims, “you read here what it says he did to these people,” and “I couldn't take my children any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it” (117).…

The Family decides to drive down to Florida for a vacation even though the grandmother protests it and states that she would rather go to Tennessee. The main reason why she doesn't want to go to Florida is because she has read about a crazed killer by the name of the Misfit who is on the run heading for Florida. The story starts out normal and on a steady pace but then all of the sudden a surprising turn of events take place. Foreshadowing can be overlooked when reading through a story the first time. It is not until one goes back and re-reads a story after knowing the ending that they can truly see the signs along the way. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor has an unexpected ending but it comes as less of a surprise if the reader pays attention to the details in the story. In this particular story, O’Connor describes the way grandmother dresses, the graves, and the automobile that the Misfit drives. Those details may seem innocent during the first read-through but they are not missed when one realizes, at the end, their true meanings.…

One of the utmost unforgettable lines from “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” originates from the Misfit when he says, “She would have been a good woman if it had been someone there to shoot her for every minute of her life (O'Connor).” Flannery O’Connor’s illustration of Christianity can be seen in within this text. Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" is filled with many key literacy elements such as point of view, structure, setting, foreshadowing, and themes. This story is told in an omniscient point of view and part objective. O'Connor allows the story to develop by itself without getting fully into the minds of one of the characters but there is a narrator. The dialogue and actions of the characters are what make up the story. I think by telling this story through these points of views readers get a better feeling of the mood in the story. There are a lot of character's reactions that would be missed if O'Connor just allowed the readers to get into the mind of only one character. O'Connor did even mention…

A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor is a short story that depicts a family road trip to Florida that ends in an abysmal tragedy when they meet the Misfit, a remorseless convict who has escaped from prison. In the beginning, the Grandmother is obsessed with everything worldly and superficial. She is completely focused on herself in relation to how others think of her. Towards the end of the story, the grandmother finds herself in ominous dialogue with The Misfit. In the story, The Misfit represents a quasi-final judgment. He does this by acting like a mirror. He lets whatever The Grandmother says bounce right off him. He never agrees nor disagrees with the grandmother, and in the end, he is the one who kills her. At the end of the story, before the Grandmother meets her fate, she has a moment of redemption. She finally distinguishes The Misfit for who he really is, not a psychopathic killer on the loose; but a person just like herself. The Misfit, being a man who is not created from social class; he is a simple human being just like the grandmother. At this point she sees herself in relation to everyone else. She finally realizes that she is not made by her class. Society makes the class, and she just fits into it. She shows this by claiming that The Misfit could be one of her own children. This story is meant to be interpreted as a parable, whereby O'Connor made skilful use of symbolism to bring about messages such as the social-superiority and the lack of spiritual faith that exist amongst common people; and the grace in humans is exposed, only when facing adverse and fatal circumstances.…

Flannery O’Connor was one of the most known authors for writing southern gothic short stories. Southern gothic became a style of writing in the wake of the civil war and brought up questions in society like, ‘Why is violence such a large part of the south’s culture?’ and, ‘How did the South have such a hard time picking itself up after its defeat in the war?’ Southern gothic is usually decayed, grotesque, or derelict settings and situations and had themes of ambivalent gender roles, poverty, alienation, crime or violence. The use of O’Connor’s characters shows the entertaining but subverts the expected while also bringing up issues like the civil rights movement and gender roles in the style of Southern Gothic…
