Foreshadowing is used in several different stories to assist the reader with their predictions throughout the story. Of Mice and Men is a story about George and Lennie, two migrant workers that dream of having a ranch with animals, and being able to work for themselves. They arrive to Riverbank and meet several other workers. George and Lennie face severe obstacles at their new work. John Steinbeck, the author of the novel uses foreshadowing in the story through characters and events. In the story, John Steinbeck alludes the poem “To a Mouse”. John Steinbeck also describes Lennie’s obsession with soft things in “Pet it like it was a mouse”. In the poem, it states, “The best laid scheme of mice and men go often askew.” (Burns) In the poem “To a Mouse”, a mouse’s house is destroyed by a farmer that was plowing the land. This poem connects to foreshadowing because in the poem, the plans of the mouse go askew, predicting that the same will happen to the George and Lennie as they try to achieve the American dream.
In the novel, John Steinbeck uses foreshadowing by showing how Lennie’s actions progressively get worse. The article “Pet it like it was a mouse” states that “Lennie sat in the hay looked at a little dead puppy.” (Steinbeck Chapter 5) In this chapter of the story, Lennie got too rough with his puppy, eventually killing it. This statement connects to foreshadowing because it shows that Lennie’s actions are getting worse, and could soon get out of hand.
The author uses foreshadowing by making it clear to the reader that the migrant workers are trying to achieve the American dream. As stated by Crooks, “every… one of ‘em’s got a little piece of land in his head… never…one of ‘em ever gets it.” (Steinbeck Chapter 4) Steinbeck shows that people doubted them from the very start.
