Romeo, Benvolio, and Mercutio decide to attend the masked ball at the Capulet house where they are forbidden to be. Romeo is still trying to get over the heartbreaking Rosaline who denied Romeo’s love. Well into the party Romeo spots Juliet and instantly forgets about Rosaline. When Benvolio
hears of this new girl Romeo is claiming to be in love with he tell Romeo “ Take thou some new infection to thy eye, and the rank poison of the old will die.”(1.2.49-50) Benvolio is telling Romeo that he has acquired his “new infection” which is Juliet and has let go of the “old poison” which is Rosaline. Benvolio is pointing out that the love that Romeo has for the girl is dangerous or infectious. This is paving the way for the lovers fate and their fatal death. Infections grow just like Romeo's love for juliet, also infections end in fatal injury, just like Romeo's love for juliet.
Romeo visits Friar Lawrence’s cell to talk about the marriage. Romeo is very enthusiastic about his soon to be wife, but Friar Lawrence reminds him “ These violent delights have violent ends and in their triumph die, like fire and powder.”(2.6.9-10) Friar Lawrence further proofs the ill fate of the two lovers, he reminds them that their unbreakable love will result in fatal death. And in the midst of happiness the two lover’s joy may end instantly with the worst illness of all, death.
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses foreshadowing to portray that the lovers fate ultimately led to death of both. Shakespeare reminds us to be cautious with our love and control ourselves before we end ourselves.
