These stories are very different but have the same idea for a theme. That is that no one controls their fate. As hard as we try, there's nothing we can do, nothing we do will give us complete control over our fate. For example, in the Monkey’s Paw the White family tries to control their fate by wishing all of their debt away by using the monkey’s paw. However, fate didn’t like that and gave them what they wanted, at the cost of their only sons life. This is also shown in Masque of the Red Death. However in the Masque of the Red Death Prince prospero tried his hardest to prevent death from the disease, however, as hard as he tried there was no escape.
