There are about twenty or more books spread across the glass coffee table. Each person picks one to read a chapter. Then the girls analyze the story, pictures and characters of the book they read. The children range in ages 5-10 and are all girls. There is one adult that administrator the activities and group discussions. Everyone’s behaviors are respectful and kind of each other. There are four girls that meet every Friday, after school. The program is designed to help enhance their reading and comprehension abilities so that they can become better achievers in the future from understanding and communication. It is a free program; however, the girls are responsible for paying a five dollar in dues each time they meet. This helps to cover the charge of snacks. Most of the books come from the public library or the parents of each child keep a stack at their…

In This Fleeting World, David Christian delivers a wonderful thesis about world history, starting with the “Big Bang” around 13.7 billion years ago leading to the formation of this world, life, humans and their survival realm that leads into this present day. Christian deliberately describes three eras in order, comparing and contrasting attributes such as survival techniques, kinship/social skills, technology and architecture showing changes through time. The “Afro-Eurasian” continent is the starting point Christian uses to explain the expansion of humanity relating to the “Out of Africa” theory.…
Set in Palestine, Paradise Now is a movie that tells the story of two Palestinian childhood friends Khaled and Said, who are recruited to carry out a terrorist mission in Tel Aviv, Israel. The two friends are to cross into Israel and blow themselves up, a plan the friends are to keep secret from their families and relatives. The movie is seen as an accurate portrayal of the real life situation of Palestine citizens who are not happy with the thirty-eight years that Israelites have occupied their land. Said is angered by the fact that the status of victims, what he believes belongs to them by right, is taken away from them by the Israelis. This assertion by Said seems to be the position taken by Palestine. Paradise Now speaks about the Palestine condemnation of violence and offers insight into those taking part in such inhumane acts. Paradise Now brings forth the issues in the Palestine-Israel war.…
In This POW, our task was to find out how Carletta, a highly intelligent and very talkative student solved her wise teacher’s problem. She and two other students were complaining about the number of POW’s that they have had to complete throughout the semester. The teacher and the three students made a deal. The three complaining students would close their eyes and sit down in chairs. While they were sitting down, the teacher would take three hats out of a possible five, (3 blue hats and 2 red hats) and place one hat on each student’s head and then hide the other two. Then, one at a time, the students would open their eyes, look at the other two students’ heads, and try to guess which color hat was on their own head. The students had two options. They could either to guess what color of hat they had on their own head or pass. If a student guessed the correct color of hat on their own head they would be exempt from any POW’s the rest of the semester, but if they guess wrong they had to do all of the POW’s as well as grading all of the others students’ POW’s. The other option is to pass, if a student chose to pass then the workload stayed the same. The first student, Arturo, opened his eyes and looked at the other person’s heads. He couldn’t tell for sure what color of hat he had on, so he decided to pass. The next student, Belicia, looked up and saw that she couldn’t tell by looking at the other’s hats either so she decided to pass also. Carletta was third. She sat there, with her eyes still closed tightly and said, “I know what color hat I have on,” and she gave the correct answer. Our task is to find out how she did this.…
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, This Side of Paradise, was his first book that he published that sparked his stardom in the world of authorship. Thomas Jefferson once said,” If you find yourself constantly trying to prove your worth to someone, you have already forgotten your value.” Life is quite a journey. There are numerous things that will forgo in life that will cause people to change their thinking or beliefs. The friends’ people hang out with, their hobbies, interests, schools and universities they attend. They are all part of the equation in finding your identity and your purpose in life. For Amory Blaine, it started all the way back from his childhood when his mother was raising him. After that came the countless, un-meaningful relationships,…
In the book Storming Heaven by Denise Giardina, education, and the lack there of, plays one of the largest roles in the character's lives. At this time in West Virginia, where the book is set, many children had to leave school and actually go into the coalmines, as Rondal Lloyd did, or work on the family farm. Racial ignorance is also a key element Giardina confronts in the novel. The characters, chief and secondary, equally cultural and racially bland, pass on their beliefs and therefore help to maintain the continuous circle of inequality that carries on even today. Political knowledge, at least on the national and state level, is also lacking within the little town of Annadel. With this knowledge coupled with her own experiences from growing up as an immigrants daughter in the same coalfields as her novels characters, Denise Giardina tries to explain the function of education and ignorance in not only the coalfields of West Virginia, but throughout the entire world.…

The monster was influenced by 3 works of literature. He found them in an abandoned bag in the woods near the cottage he was spying on. The works of literature are Lost Paradise, Plutarch's lives, and The Sorrows of Young Werther. The books are very meaningful to him in a different way and it gives him a great deal of happiness. In the book The Sorrows of Young Werther, he is fascinated with death and suicide. In Plutarch’s lives he learns about heros and makes him even more interested about them than ever before. In the book Lost Paradise he believes that God is factual and is not apart of a belief system. He compares himself to Satan and believes that he is an outcast. The three books are each about a different part of life and he could feel…
The time after World War I is usually seen as a prosperous one, full of extreme economic growth and opportunity. The most prominent image is over flappers and speakeasies, people that challenged any traditional thoughts, and boldly moved forward into the future. F. Scott Fitzgerald is known for being a writer from this time period, and is labelled as one of the “Lost Generation.” Interestingly, his perception of the time period is something much more bleak. The author recognized the social unrest that had been stirred up by the conflict between traditions and innovation. Many were scared of the future, while others pushed ahead without looking back. The angst of this time period is often recognized in the novels of the Lost Generation in the…

When the first time I heard this activity from the school broadcast, I put my Name on the paper on the player list right after. Because I knew this is going to be very interesting and I could gain a great experience from it. Since there were many students involved in this game, the principle needed to choose the players. Briefly we had most 80 students wanted to join the competition, and the winner can get a bike. So the first previous test was set in front of us. The principle passed all of us a sheet which had 20 questions about selling, the people who can get over 15 points would get a chance to join the game. Fortunately, 20 of us received over 15 points, and I was one of these 20 people. So I got a chance for this competition. For the next five days, school was asking all the students to bring their old stuff which were they do not need in their houses. And after five days, school gathered many stuff and put them in 20 boxes fairly, on the first day of next week, 20 players were going to sell those stuff, and we would get one box for each of us randomly.…
