Formal Analysis: Lange By Richard Lange
In this image, Lange portrays pathos by displaying many forms of emotion all in one frame. Desperation is swept across the young mother’s face. She sits there, pondering what is going to happen next, worrying about where she is going to go next. Also, her face shows a sense of humility, and she knows she is trying her best. Moving down to her hand, her ring shows a glimpse of hope in what the future is going to hold. She could have sold her ring, and gotten a few good meals and she maybe could be living in something better than a tent, but she chose not to. The ring shows the strength in family, and how family stays together even in hard times, and it is a symbol of what was and hope for what will be. It is a beacon through the storm.

In “Total Eclipse,” by Annie Dillard, Dillard contrasts the emerging ring of light around the sun to an old silver wedding band or a morsel of bone in order to juxtapose the different feelings the eclipse raises as well as portray the lasting impression the total eclipse had on people. A worn wedding band insinuates the notion of the eclipse’s beauty and excitement in suspense of it, just as a marriage; moreover, a marriage lasts forever much like the imprinting the eclipse leaves on people. Dillard, for example, become attached to it and recounts it as lingering in her memory forever; so much so that she could write about it two years later in exceptional detail. Dillard belies the wedding band with a morsel of a bone, which serves as a symbol…

The red pickle dish represents the Frome’s marriage. The pickle dish was a wedding present for Zeena and Ethan. Zeena considered it her most prized possession, storing it away at the top of the China cabinet. Just like the stored away dish, Ethan and Zeena’s love had been put away once married. The first night Zeena is gone; Mattie takes out the plate and uses it during dinner. By defying her sister’s wishes and using the dish, Mattie unintentionally defies Zeena and Ethan’s marriage. The breaking of the dish can represent different things. According to Ethan, the broken dish represents his broken dinner plans with Mattie. A night he was excited for ended up being an average night. The breaking of the dish, however, could also represent the breaking of Zeena and Ethan’s marriage, since it was a clear symbol of their marriage. The dish broke under the weight of Ethan and Mattie’s relationship. Ethan then attempts to hide the dish from Zeena, hiding the failure of their marriage and his feelings for Mattie. His deception failed when Zeena found the broken dish. The broken plate was basically dead to her, just like her marriage was dead. She cried at this discovery, showing her human side. Zeena seems to understand the symbolism of the dish, and she cries when she finally realizes the only thing left she loved in her marriage was broken. Instead of trying to fix the dish, Zeena only sulks over the remnants of the shattered plate. Like the plate, she does not attempt to fix her marriage either. The pickle dish becomes a clear symbol that the Frome marriage has failed under the relationship between Mattie and Ethan, and neither Ethan nor Zeena care to fix the broken marriage. Although upset, they both move on.…

Goldsworthy uses Keller as a symbol of the effects of war on humanity and of loss. It is evident through the photograph of his family that war brings the loss of people’s most cared-about things in life. The use of emotive language as Keller picks up the picture creates empathy in the responder and allows people to relate to the destruction of relationships by one means or another. The fact that Keller has no little finger is a symbolic gesture of defiance of war. Paul’s description: “A gold ring on the stump seemed to deliberately flaunt its absence”. This is creates a very confronting image, and is enhanced later in the novel where it is told that Keller cut it off himself in retaliation to playing piano for Hitler. The effects of war are also a prominent in the image, The Falling Man, relating to the September 11 terror attacks. The use of colour, the contrast of light and dark shadows, immediately is symbolic of two sides; of good against evil; binary opposites. This is in contrast to Goldsworthy using language which creates the most colourful and lively images to convey his message. The word “Falling” in the title is not…

Authors often use symbolism in their stories to help their readers through the story and to help them know what's important. In this series the ring that frodo holds is a symbol of evil and how it corrupts you if you do its bidding. In this story if you put on the ring you do what it wanted you to do and then it takes over your body making you want to control all others or drives you mad and makes you run away. The symbol of the ring also became a symbol of war and until it was destroyed people would be at constant war and the evil would be winning and that’s how the ring ties into the thesis that war is…

“My spirit takes journey, my spirit takes flight, could not have risen otherwise & I am not running... I am choosing.” Alike is an intelligent and poetically talented 17 year old girl. On the surface, Dee Rees’s Pariah (2011), is the coming of age story of African-American lesbian, Alike. Growing up in a traditional household that is sexually repressed and a society that is hateful towards her for being homosexual she finds solace in poetry and academics. Through her plight, the film intelligently layers the dark themes associated with the struggles of a gay teenager growing up in the inner city- gender, sexuality, family relations, hate, religion, ignorance, etc. But the film is very hopeful in that it contrasts the dark themes with pleasant moments of optimism. I am analyzing one of the final scenes in the Dee Rees’s Pariah (2011). The scene [@ 01:15:11] where Alike is reconciling with Arthur, her father, on the rooftop of Laura’s building. The rooftop scene encompasses the beauty of the morals of the narrative really well and at the same time contrasts the dark themes of the film in a manner that compliments the overall aesthetic of the production.…

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Where there is a marriage without love, there will be love without marriage.” (Benjamin) Marriage is the foundation for social order because it restrains us from self centeredness and self indulgence. However, with the wrong significant other, one can find themselves on the path to adultery. (Craven) Ethan Frome is a story of a family caught in a deeply rooted domestic struggle. In the novel, the main character Ethan is caught in a love triangle between his wife Zeena, and his maid Mattie. There are numerous themes and conflicts throughout the context. However, within the themes of weakness, isolation, poverty, loves and death, the author brings in five different symbols. A symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something else, esp. a material object representing something abstract. (Symbolling) Moreover, they allow the characters to articulate their emotions more clearly to the reader, which is very useful in bringing light to the story, and it illuminates the meaning that cannot be expressed in words. For example, a dark room symbolizes darkness, depression, gloominess, and hopelessness; therefore we would link that part of the story with darkness. Although, some symbols are easy to define, others require more research and reading. Likewise, through reading Ethan Frome, the color red, pickle dish, cat, setting, and light and darkness all highlight the major conflicts that arise throughout the context. (Wharton)…

    Faith Ringgold Analysis

This is a crucial message that Ringgold was trying to show the world. "The hand to the man's heart could symbolize his loyalty and devotion to his country, while the knife can be interpreted as his fight for freedom in this country that he cares so much for." "This double sided attitude of a single person representing the black community becomes both a denunciation and the artist's criticism of violent activism."(Great Women Masters of Art p. 439) One could speculate that this painting was also referencing the African American men fighting and dying in Vietnam, protecting the rights of the South Korean people and defending their country, while they weren't allowed the rights they deserved back home. She also possibly was sending a message to the more violent groups of the times such as the Black Panthers, that unity, opposed to violence would be the best way to accomplish their common goals. This very strong statement to the world was purposely simple in its design in order to make her painting more accessible to people, and to hopefully allow any person that looked at it understand the true meaning of her…

The novel “Uglies” by Scott Westerfeld has an enormous amount of symbolism within thisnovel, that people can take from. In the story you are born “ugly” and when you turn 16 yearsold you get an operation to make you a “pretty” and then you get to live in New Pretty Townwith all of the pretties. The Ruins was a place that had depended all on oil, and crumbled downwhen they had run out that resource. This city symbolizes how easily things can fall especially ifyou only depend on one thing. Another symbol in the novel is the heart shaped pendant whichsymbolizes Tally’s conscience and all of the tough decisions she has to make. For example atough decision she had to make was when she had to tell Special Circumstances where Shay wasor she would…

In "Aunt Jen's Tiger," Adrienne Rich weaves a tapestry and expresses an aggressive woman through the tiger; yet it shows how free she is. In the story, the wedding ring is described as a token of enslavement, taking it off gives her hope. In this poem, women are oppressed, but they don't want to be. This poem portrays Rich's life so much that it is like she is hiding behind the character of "Jennifer." When she says that taking the ring off gives her hope, it shows that she had to end her marriage to really set herself free. The women are oppressed in the poem, so were the women in her time; women were subordinate to men.…
