Former Colonies Advantages
The primary argument proffered by these Latin American scholars was that these newly independent and developing nations were structurally different from industrialized countries and, therefore, required dissimilar approaches to achieve developed status. The history of these former colonies is that their economies were organised to produce raw materials, cash crops, and foodstuff for export at low prices to their colonial masters. These arrangements shaped a relationship that consistently disadvantaged former colonies and to restricted their economic and social

Why is it that this region is so rich in resources and has not been able to achieve sustainable economic development? Latin America’s trade and economy grew very slowly. Between 1700 and 1800 was the highest import of African slaves. The Triangular/Atlantic slave trade was where African slaves were exported to Latin America, where the raw materials and crops produced would be exported, through Spain, to the world, and finished products would be exported from Europe to Latin America. Early discoveries of gold and silver production created the first basis of its economy and the exports of silver and gold would make up more than 2/3 of Latin America’s economy, trade, and income. Plantations, agriculture, and the crops produced would make up the majority of the rest of Latin America’s exports. Sugar would continue to be a major cash crop and an economic booster for Latin American countries even into present day. Recently, the Latin American region has generally begun to privatize exports, and sold state-controlled companies to private owners.…

In the late 1800’s and 1900’s America began taking control of smaller nations and territories. This action is called imperialism. America practiced imperialism because of its needs for raw materials and markets, nationalism, and to gain access to different ports for their navy. Among the places taken under American control was the Latin American territory and former Spanish colony of Puerto Rico. America’s imperialism politically striped Puerto Rico of its right to self-govern and control its own affairs, which greatly upset the Puerto Rican people.…

In short, the American colonies sole purpose was to supply England with the resources they were able to obtain from the North America. The colonies were viewed as second citizens under the British rule, but the lifestyle and custom between the two were obvious different. As you stated in your discussion, while the colonists and those living in England shared history and a frame of reference regarding aristocratic versus monarchic rule, over the course of two centuries, their daily life experiences grew more and more separate. In my discussion, I stated, “the colonists had control of their local affairs, but England believed they had control over the colonial affairs” (Reich, 2011). For the most part, there was obvious an misunderstanding of…

During the colonization of North America, the colonists created opportunities that not only benefited them, but these opportunities benefited the founding of the United States of America. The opportunities created ranged from free practice of religion by the Pilgrims to the chance of getting away from major debt within the lower class of England. The surreal amount of new resources the English had access to created opportunities in the production of goods and trade as well. Although these opportunities had some sort of gain for the Thirteen Colonies, the opportunity that created the largest benefit was the new government systems that originated in Virginia and Massachusetts. Every colony the English created had to acquiescence to a charter, a “written agreement between the colony and the king of England or Parliament.” (“The Colonial Experience”).…

In this time period, I would have been a wife to a delegate, seeing as I am a female and can not be a delegate myself, and I would've like to be a Northern colonist. As a woman, I would have felt pressure caring for any children that I might have had due to the idea of republican motherhood though I would have had better opportunities in education than the original colonist women probably had (Kennedy 159). Being an individual person, I would probably have my own opinions when it came to certain things. I would most likely be for the abolishment of the slave trade because, being from the north, there would not be as much need for slaves where I lived because most slaves lived in the southern colonies and worked on large southern plantations (Kennedy 68-69). It was also…

Imperialism overseas benefited the European countries because after the Opium wars the chinese had to trade with European countries and this gave the Countries access to silk and spices from the Chinese. Another benefit was the rubber, diamonds, and gold coming from Africa. This also harmed relations due to things like the First Boer war between the Dutch and England. The odomuren massacre also gave people a bad feeling about imperialism because the British mowed down unarmed protesters with machine guns. It also was had a bad name after the photos from the congo was leaked to the public so people could see what the Dutch under Leopold the second were doing to the native people. Something that caused anger and almost conflict was when Wilhelm…

By the end of the seventeenth century, trade was the underpinning of the empire and the primary source of competition between European realms. The North American colonies were connected to Atlantic business by laws and trade. To exemplify, as the American settlements were drawn ever more entirely into the system of Atlantic market, they shared in the era’s consumer upheaval. In harbor cities and small inland villages, stores flourished and American media was covered in advertisements for British commodities. British vendors provided American traders with loans to allow them to import these goods, and roaming peddlers carted them into distant frontier territories. England traveled to seize power over Atlantic industry, solidify its grip on North…

Latin America 's independence can be traced over time through several key movements, especially in the cases of Haiti and Brazil. In the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, both of these colonies saw the massive undertaking of revolution from their monarchs. Likewise, the Spanish-American colonies saw a long series of rebellious campaigns which resulted in the total secession from European sovereignty. These three distinct happenings had co-mingling causes and effects, especially in the social domains of status and race.…
