Forrest Gump Book Comparison
Two texts which follow similar narratives, character development/themes are the pedestrian a short story by ray Bradbury and Forrest Gump a film by Robert Zemeckis, the film is loosely based on the novel by Winston groom. The fantasy elements of the narrative together with the likeable and believable young characters. Both have been particularly popular with the likeable and believable young characters have struck a chord with this age group. In this essay I will discuss and evaluate the ways in which the eponymous main character is developed in the novel (a prose text) and the film (media text).     Nathan Bedford Forrest is memorialized as one of the greatest cavalrymen of the American Civil War, and arguably one of the most controversial. He was born in Tennessee in 1812 to a broken family. Forrest worked as a cotton planter and slave trader, in which he largely profited. In the early years of the war he pledged his allegiance to the Confederate States, and enlisted as a Private in the army. Soon Forrest rose to Lieutenant General, despite having no prior military training. Forrest served as a cavalry officer at numerous major battles, where he earned his nickname, “The Wizard of the Saddle”, and conducted several successful raids. Following his retirement in the military forces, Forrest worked as a planter and railroad president. In 1866, Forrest would become an early member of the Ku Klux Klan, or KKK.     Have you ever watched a movie that was made off of a book, but the movie was better? Well if you have ever watched and read Forrest Gump, you would find out that the movie has well surpassed the book. In both stories the main character Forrest Gump goes through a series of misfortunate events that eventually turn him into an American hero and millionaire. In each event of his life he meets new people and befriends them due to his kindness and stupidity. This also could be for the reason of feeling bad for him, but is not mentioned in either story.     Most experts of young adults’ literature agreed upon characteristics that have historically defined the genre that a protagonist is a teenager and events revolve around the protagonist and his struggle to resolve conflict (Pam, p. 49). In short stories discussed the three main characters are teenage boys. They differ from each other in their age, appearance and behaviour. All boys in stories are of different age, Charles is from eight to thirteen years old, Peter age is not directly sad, but he is at age that his father ‘’wants me [he] to learn to drive’’ (Tuohy, p. 124) and finally, the third boy, whom name is not mentioned, is 18 years old: ‘’they had been studying for ‘A’ levels together’’ (‘A’ levels – a British exam taken in particular subject, usually in the final year of school at age of 18) (MacLaverty, p.110, 121). The narrator tells the story from his childhood flashbacks when he was a very young boy. Age differences show distinct perspective on these boys’ behaviours. The appearance of the boys’ are also described dissimilar. Peter’s look is represented as it is not important, the narrator just comments on his voice: ‘’Peter’s voice thrum like a slack guitar string’’ (Tuohy, p. 124).
