Fort Bliss Case Study

Although Fort Bliss is a military post with gates, gate guards and fences that line the perimeter, crime still happens in the community housing area. According to Chief Barnes, Chief of police on Fort Bliss, crimes in these areas have reported an increase of over 35% in the past year due to theft, vandalism and breaking and entering. Family members within in the community have verbally expressed to the Housing Office that they do not feel safe in their home and do not feel comfortable allowing their children to play outside on the front lawn or on the community playground. Sergeant Major Jonas of the 93D Military Police Battalion spoke to families that live on Wendover Street who reported things missing from their yards such as their children’s bicycles, strollers and toys. According to the Garrison Command Sergeant Major Holschbach, some of the crimes are being done by adults and young teens that live in the community. The Garrison Commander, Command Sergeant Major with JAG and Fort Bliss housing should create detailed regulations that will be implemented into the Garrison guidelines, that there be an increase in Military Police presence, as well as a neighborhood watch and a curfew for teens in each housing area in order to help prevent these crimes.
The Garrison Command Team, JAG, Chief of Police of Fort Bliss, as well as the Command Team of each Military Police Battalion and Fort Bliss Family Housing will meet, discuss and implement new regulations that will ensure the safety of it’s community.
