Fort Fisher Research Paper
Fort Fisher is located off the coast of North Carolina near Wilmington. The Fort is positioned in a pivotal location for the South and was a vital port during the Civil War. Fort Fisher helped keep the North Carolinian port open to blockade runners, which were supplying food and other goods to the people inland. During the Civil War, ports were extremely important for the survival of the South. The South had an agricultural economy and since they were growing cotton instead of food, the ports helped them to receive the other goods necessary to live. The North realized this and would slowly choke the South’s waterways, blocking the ports using the Anaconda Plan by General-in-chief Winfield Scott. However, Wilmington’s port would remain open …show more content…
We wanted to go somewhere we had not been and make it an adventure; we asked some of our friends if they would want to go with us. We decided to go to Fort Fisher and go for the weekend. Our friend Raven was able to go with us and after minimal planning we headed towards the beach. The ride down there was very eventful. We had stopped in Garner to get food, I am convinced it might be the worst town in North Carolina because while there, a man rode a golf cart into the KFC/Taco Bell parking lot, we also witnessed a man being detained by a police officer in the parking lot. When we tried to leave and get back on the Highway there was so much traffic I almost had an anxiety attack. After we had arrived in Wilmington we almost ran out of gas, because I forgot to check to see how much we had. It was a terrifying experience. (We did find a gas station and did not run out of gas though) When we finally got to Fort Fisher, it was really cold and windy there but we still had a lot of fun. We walked around the museum and saw how big the ammunition that was used was; there was a torpedo that was as big as my shin/calf and a canon ball as big as my head. We saw dioramas of the fort being built and later reacted them on the trail. We walked along the trail and halfway through realized that we went around the wrong way because all the signs were facing away from us. We sat on …show more content…
However, I am glad I went there I learned a lot and I enjoy visiting historical sites and learning the importance they had. We had never been off together like that before and it was a trip of many firsts. The friends I went with made it an unforgettable

In response to the confederate attack on Fort Sumner, the General in Chief Winfield Scott, proposed his idea which he called the Anaconda Plan. The general idea was that the Federal government would use the Navy to block all the major southern ports such as New Orleans and Charleston. This blockade would be a method in which the government could supposedly quickly regain the submission of the southern states. The next part of the plan was for the Northern troops to take control of the Mississippi River to divide the southern states in half. The last major point of Steward’s plan was to march from the Tennessee Valley to the coast of Georgia. There were those who opposed the plan believing it was too slow and that enforcing a blockade would…

Time. Time was the key reason for the North's victory and was achieved through a combination of the first and second reasons. As the war progressed the Union's blockade, largely a paper tiger at the beginning due to the fact that the Navy didn't have enough ships to properly enforce it, became a real blockade that slowly strangled the Confederacy to death. And as the war progressed the South, even before the end of the prisoner exchange, was losing men it could not afford to lose to attrition. Supplies and transportation of supplies. As stated in the first reason, the North was less dependant on Europe than the South was for supplies. There should be little doubt that the South was able to manufacture supplies needed to fight the war, but never in amounts it needed. Industry in the North was a bit larger than it was in the South and was thus able to out produce that of the South. But being able to out produce the South was all well and good unless the South could get the supplies to its troops in the field faster. It then became important to capture major railroad junctions and thus cut off the South's ability to move supplies in a timely…

    The Nullification Crisis

The majority of the northern states weren’t affected by the tariffs because their industries were not targeted. As the strength of the tariffs accumulated, the Southern people felt a rising sense of a common identity in their decision to declare the tariffs null and void and their desire to remove themselves from the Union intensified. President Jackson believed the South’s interest in nullification was the same as an act of treason and asserted the union’s dominance over the South by sending a battleship to Charleston. These tensions between the South and those northern states that believed the union must be preserved, were a contributing factor to the cause of the Civil…

During the time that I went on the trip, life had become very stressful for me. I had gotten into the School of Architecture at the University of Houston but due to family issues I wouldn’t be able to go, I desperately needed a job, and I constantly fought with my parents, who were also fighting with each other. I couldn’t do anything on the weekends or spend time with friends or do anything of that nature at all, but so the trip…

We drove down in separate cars from Kentucky enduring about thirteen long hours of “fun” with my immediate family. We finally arrive in animal kingdom where we are staying in one of the Disney hotels. We get to our room and get settled in when I look out on the balcony and see giraffes, and antelopes, and peacocks walking around in my back yard. It was one of my favorite parts of this trip. We then go out to wait for the bus to take us to our first kingdom, epcot. I remember immediately being here as a child and know exactly what I want to go and do and see. Now being seventeen, I take one of my cousins and we go off on our own to see what we want to experience. We go to the science museum and learn about space and evolution which has through my high school years been very beneficial to me. Having fun and learning at the same time was great. I spend the entire next day going around to all the rides and enjoying them at least two times each. I couldn’t believe how much fun I was having. After that I went to the stores and got all the things I wanted to take back home to remember this trip…

We may have failed our personal mission but that didn’t mean we didn’t enjoy ourselves. It was easily one of the best vacations I have ever been on. I had arrived in Savannah, Georgia with my Girl Scout troop we had been collecting money for months and the first place we planned to go to was to Juliet Gordon Low’s (The Founder of Girl Scouts) house. Her house was gigantic and was under construction but covering the side of her house was a beautiful enormous photograph of her holding one of the many pets she owned. Once we arrived at the side gate of the house they gave us a time to come back and sent us on a scavenger hunt in one of the many squares in Savannah a block away. It was fun and confusing, but we managed to complete the scavenger hunt and meet different Girl Scout troops and we even meet a troop from Houston, Texas. Once we finished our scavenger hunt we went back to Juliet Gordon Low’s house we entered through the side gate and entered into a gorgeous garden .Then it was time to enter the house we weren’t allowed to take pictures but I can still remember the rooms like it was yesterday. They lived in the Victorian era and had beautiful possessions and paintings. They had a lot of rules and one was children were not allowed to eat with the adults so they even had a little table set up for them. We were led to a humongous gorgeous spiraling stair case that led to all the bed rooms and there we learned more about how she lived and her life there. The tour sadly came to an end and we went to the gift shop and left her house to return to the hotel, and talked about the things we saw until it was lights out.…

Just about anyone can tell you of a trip they’ve taken that was truly memorable. If they were like me, perhaps they took family road trips in the summer when they were kids, or maybe they had the chance to visit a foreign country. Whatever the case may be, there were events that occurred on these trips that created memories that will be cherished for the rest of their lives. I have been fortunate because I’ve traveled many places and those trips have always been memorable. My trip to Muir Woods National Park in California is one good example, and it proved to be memorable because it impacted me in ways I did not expect.…

The first famous thing we saw was the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial, it made me feel surreal, similar to I was here and it did not feel real. Afterwards, we went to a restaurant in D.C.’s mall. It had a lot of hype but the food was okay, but not the best. To end the night, we went to our hotel to sleep. My roommates were Dhalten and Ethan. It was an eventful day.…

In the summer of 2012, my mother and I decided to go up north to Medford, Wisconsin. This weekend it was a special day! The Fourth of July! All I was worried about was fireworks. I love fire my parents always called me a pyro as a little kid. Son we packed up all our stuff for the weekend and headed out for the long car ride ahead of us. The first thing I saw when we pulled up was a huge landscape filled with trees and small, leafy brush everywhere! In the middle of it was a gigantic pond, I guess you could call it a lake. It was this weekend that I added multiple things to my experiences. Boating, lighting off fireworks, and getting lost in the woods changed my perspective a little bit.…

Our adventure started out in the middle of summer on a Monday afternoon. It took us a while to load up the van, but once we did, we hit the road immediately. I drove through the dangerous mountain roads of Virginia and West Virginia. Driving through the mountains of the Appalachian gave me a better experience and taught me to drive in heavy traffic, and curvy, slippery roads. The scenery was breathtaking, one look at the beautiful mountain ridges is a memory I’ll never forget. At one point we drove through a tunnel built though the mountains. This caused our GPS to lose connection leading us to getting lost for about an hour. Luckily, the signal picked up and the adventure continued. There was so much traffic on the highway. There had been an accident right in front of me while I was driving 65mph. I suddenly came to a complete stop within in a matter of seconds. If I had pushed the brakes just a second later we all would have been done for. This scared me a lot because my whole family was in the car with me.…

When we took a look at our itinerary we found it to very packed with daily activities. Some individuals thought that it was too much for the short period of time that we were in each city. I was not one of those individuals. I looked forward to making the most out of every minute of the two weeks that were allotted for the experience. Not only were we able to visit the national monuments for each country and cross them off our bucket list but we were able to gain valuable insight into some of the laws and operations of the countries visited. For me personally there was more to learn. This experienced helped me further and improve myself awareness in regards to working with others.…
