His idea was to trick him, make him think he’s there to test some wine. When Fortunato and Montresor got down into the catacombs, Montresor’s plan was under way.

When they got into the catacombs, Montresor killed his friend. He knew the words he was going to say and the choices he was going to make and he didn’t think twice about it.
